Question about the "Roll Your Own" air cleaner..
« on: October 19, 2006, 07:35:36 PM »

I got all of the parts, now I'm concerned that in the SE catalog there is mention that the '07 FLHTCUSE's require part number 29121-07 "COVER, AIR CLEANER, CHROME W/OUT NOTCH" for $192.

What's up with that?...And why?

Unless something is very different on the 07 from the 06, the stock cover will work just fine...if you ordered the thick gasket with the roll your own kit, put it on the k&n, bolt it up with blue locktite, including the main center bolt...mines been on for 6500 miles and works fine.  No air goes through the setup unfiltered...

Just went to the HD website and can't find 29121-07. What is the correct a/c set up that I will "need" for the new '07? And what other associated parts will I need to add to the list? Thanks in advance, AJ

[highlight]The Screamin' Eagle air cleaner kits currently available DO NOT come with the superior K&N oiled air filter element.  The non-oiled paper elements that H-D currently uses are not very durable, and in fact some of the rubber gaskets have shown major deterioration in 5000 miles.  You can do as I did, which is to throw the paper element in the weeds and buy the real K&N filter element (or the similar element from Zippers or Arlen Ness).  Unfortunately, this involves additional expense on top of the rather excessive price for the original SE kit.  There is another way for those who haven't purchased the kit yet.  Purchase the K&N filter (K&N part number HD-0800, internet or direct, approximately $45 to $50), then buy the chrome back plate ($40) and the studs/screws/etc. individually from your dealer.  The following H-D part numbers, combined with the K&N filter element, equals a kit like the old SE air cleaner, without the added expense of the throwaway paper element, and with a better looking chrome back plate:

Back Plate, Chrome             29510-05
Gasket                              29583-01A
Breather Tube - rubber (2)  29557-05
"O" ring (2)                        11292
Stud, mounting (3)              29447-99A
Screw, button head (3)        3938

You reuse the original breather hollow bolts, but if you need new ones for some reason the part number is 29465-99.

OK, guys...copied and pasted the original post from Jerry (grc) out of the Twin Cam topic into here...I also bumped the thread back to the top, so if you want to read all the associated comments you can do so in the Twin Cam section of the board.

The issue with the '06 and '07 air cleaner covers is in the internal shape of the cover where it sits against the end of the filter element.

I just purchased a K&N filter the same size as the stock H-D paper element and used it inside the stock air box.

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this cuz I'm sure it's EZ but I want to get this right when I do the install ... does anyone have the "exploded view" to show where the bolts, gasket, o rings , etc go for the "roll your own"? Plus any tips or tricks? Might save me some time. Thanks.

Refer back to the original post on the "Roll Your Own" - I added a drawing as an attachment some time back to help clarify things.
