I can not agree more, especially on the tail lights.. What the H were they thinking????  b]

The previous "Cadillac" lights on the SERG/SESG/SERK (in that order of introduction) were perfect on that rear fascia. There was NO need to change them AT ALL.

I think a lot of the best designers are probably gone now that Willie G. Is not around any longer. Or maybe they were never that good in the first place, and they are lost without his guidance. At any rate, the crew in charge of styling there now doesn't seem to really understand the heritage nor the need for continuity and true tasteful style. They seem to just be throwing a lot of new stuff on, without really thinking holistically about how the whole look of the bike hangs together, and what statement it makes.

Or maybe they are just compelled to make some needless change just for the sake of not staying the same. It's seems as if they think the customers are idiots who will buy whatever new crap they decide to put out.

It reminds me of a show my wife likes to watch on HGTV called "Design On A Dime" or something about getting a look as cheaply as possible... but THEY actually do a good JOB of it on that show...

Well said.   I talked to my dealer who was at the dealer meeting and the lights that you described and that were dam nice....are gone leaving a lot of people who looked at the  14 CVO Road King at the event disappointed and in shock...at least that is what he stated to me....
GEEZ its the one thing most people liked and now they had to fix that too...Go figure :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Well, I will be KEEPING the Honey Badger for the duration... and neither of us give a CHIT about a new SESG. Now that Willie G. is gone, I don't expect to ever see another SESG... which is fine, because as you said they would probably screw it up with those awful taillights anyway.

BTW, has anyone noticed that you can buy a fully-loaded non-CVO Ultra Limited in the two-tone paint for LESS than the bare-bones '14 SERK? The SERK paint, 110 engine, Agitator wheels, etc. don't seem worth it to me. If I were in the market, this year, I'd go with the Amber Whiskey/Vivid Black Limited any day... you get a LOT more bang for the buck.

Or maybe I'm just not cool enough to see the attraction of the '14 SERK...

Ken

There are some of us who just do not like a batwing bike, me being one of them.  Funny thing is I wanted a CVO street glide so bad before they ever came out with one.  At that point I had never rode a bike with a fairing.  Well the 09 SERG came out and a salesmen convinced me that is what I really wanted.  So I rode both a SG for a Day then a RG for a day.  Disliked the SG, felt boxed in, did not like, cross winds or the shake going by an 18 wheeler.  The RG was much better, on my second one.

As for the King, I like it much better than a street glide.  Makes a great hot rod.  Also it really is the most versatile of all the touring bikes.

I did not get a SERGU for the simple fact, did not have the cool SESG or SERG rear fender and bags, plus had a King tour pick which I do not want, I almost never ride two up.

So at this point I would want a SERK much more than the Limited even if you get more for the money.  For a long time you get more for your money with a Ultra then a street glide, but the street glide is the best seller.

Who know in 15 if there is no CVO RG I may have to get a CVO Ultra Limited, but I am really hoping they have an RG or even a SG in CVO.

The 14 CVO King is great in my opinion with the exception of the FUGLY tail lights.  Wonder if the 13 lights could swapped in place of those FUGLY lights. I love my 13 CVO King.

All of that is totally fair, and I can appreciate it. The SERGU never appealed to me, but CUSEs never really have either.

I really wanted an '09 SERGC in the orange/black when I bought the Honey Badger, but couldn't find one. I was never that into SGs until the SESG came out with the stretched bags and the SERGC-style rear fascia. When I saw my bike I fell in love with it instantly, probably because of the Hot Citrus paint. I bought it, then ordered a TP for it the day after. Go figure...

I have always LOVED the RK, and when they came out with the '13 SERK, with the SERGC/SESG-style rear fascia and bag, and the lower/bag speakers with the iPod, I was very happy. I would have bought one if didn't already have the Honey Badger. The red one is my fave, but I like the blue, too. Oddly, being an ORANGE guy, I do NOT think orange would really work on that bike at all.

It's just kind of disappointing to me that the '14 SERK is so bare-bones compared to the richly-appointed '13... but I've never been the "purist" type. I like the custom look.

Yes, all the '14 touring bikes have the new, bigger bags.

Bigger and easier (gotta try em first) opening.

August 10th, sitting under an over pass just North of Sioux City, IA waiting out a BIG thunderboomer, we had some company in the form of a HD financial employee out of Chicago.  He was headed home after Sturgis and no, he wasn't the pool boy.  He was pretty good about keeping quiet about the new '14s coming and wouldn't answer any of my questions.  However, I did try.  Of course we all know what they look like now but then, it was all tight lipped.  Couple comments he made stuck with me and with the '14s released now, I understand.
I asked him if there were any water cooled bikes.  He wouldn't comment but stated the vRod would be the only water cooled bike....which was a true statement.  The twin cooling isn't a complete water cooled motor plus the RK on this thread is still the old, reliable 110 (  :huepfenlol2: ).  He looked at my SG and made the statement "I'd keep that one if I were you".  Made me think at the time the new ones may not be "all that" and from what I can see, he was right.  Plus, sounds like the CVO SG may not come back.... :nixweiss:

I like the new bags/tour pac but want to see/operate them in person before making a final decision.  I personally like the "stock" look of the '14 CVO Road King.  Yes, they went backward in taking the stuff off they put on the '13 but the RK was never really promoted as a loaded touring bike.  Yes, you can tour on it (and quite a few of us do) but the MoCo had other models out there with more bells and whistles.  The Road King is and was always suppose to be a good, solid bare bones touring bike.  IMO, it meets that goal and now, with the new '14, it's back on the path it started.

Howard - I understand your point about the RK. Many seem to feel as you do about it. Some people seem to feel so strongly about the RK, it's as if some St. Davidson received a spiritual message from on high in 1994, revealing the borderline-divine purpose of the bike:

"Thou Shalt Have No Creature Comforts, nor Audio, nor Lowers, nor Any Feature That Seems Indulgent. Nothing Other Than A Windshield... For the Road King is Only for Riders Who Neither Desire nor Need These."

But where is it written that the RK was never intended to be anything but a stripped-down touring bike, without audio nor lowers, etc? Is it carved in stone somewhere in Milwaukee? Even the MoCo has long offered an add-on handlebar-mounted audio system for the RK!

A particular bike might have a heritage and a reputation, having traveled a certain path for a long time - but to me there is no reason why it can't evolve into something more over time. The first word in CVO is "Custom", and I really liked what they did with the '13 SERK. It had a lot of custom-looking stuff on it, as I think CVOs SHOULD have, in order to validate their sky-high prices as factory customs.

Maybe there's also a law that says "Thou Shalt Not Have a Sissy Passenger Backrest" for RKs too... because the '14 SERK doesn't even come with one of those, either!

The website says this about the '14 SERK... "For the rider who wants it all, the bike that has it all: classic style, long haul comfort. Heavy custom details."

The bike that has it ALL? Really? Long-haul comfort... with no back rests, no lowers, no audio, and that thin little stock seat? Hmmmm... I think they're pretty confused about what this bike is supposed to be themselves. I would think the messaging would be more along the lines of:

"The essence of the open road. Classic style and clean lines with custom details. Nothing to get in your way. Just the music of your engine."

That guy was right though... Keep Ginger!

Yea, I saw that quote on the site, too.  With all the other errors on the website, you think this was quote was suppose to be on the Limited?  ;D

:ROFLOL:  Maybe they cut and pasted the wrong text into the SERK page because they had to "rush more"...

Perhaps I am being overly critical of the new SERK, and expecting in to be something it's not. I just don't like it nearly as well as last year's stunner with all of its amenities and its beautiful paint.

I like CHROME front nacelles and cowbells. I was happy to see them finally replace the painted front fairing skirt and cowbells on the SESG and go to chrome up front. They should have done all chrome on the '14 SERK, too... But they apparently felt that paint on the front looks more "custom".

I could deal with all of this much better if they simply hadn't completely RUINED the taillights...  :soapbox:

Yep, those tail lights suck!  Ruins the whole clean look of the back.  The 09 back end on the SERG is what sold me on the bike.  Looks great on the SESG too and the 13 SERK.
