Ken- thanks for the shared experiences. It's nice for people that understand. When I shared the story with the people who work for me they just can't relate as they don't ride. Even my wife who is glad I'm here still can't understand. But I have talked to a couple of other riders and posting here is nice because most of us can understand.

Oh yeah... we understand. Anyone who has been riding for awhile has almost certainly had some close calls...

Close calls suck but not as bad as a wreck. I had a close call a while back. I had my left blinker on and going to make a left hand turn. As I slowed down to turn the car behind me steps on the gas to pass me in the left lane as I was about to turn. I was pissed. Went home got my 357 magnum and went looking for that small red two door Ford. Lucky for both of us I did not find her. She would be seriously wounded or dead and I would be in jail. Then to make it worse someone would steal my Bike from where the cops would have arrested me.

Harleyrider, I feel your pain.  Just recently got my bike back from getting rear ended on the freeway.  It was in the shop for a couple months waiting for the CVO painted parts.  Anyway, I was lucky and came away with a broken foot and a few road rashes.

Now, I have noticed that I'm more anxious while riding than I was before the wreck.  :nervous:  It has taken a little of the joy out of riding, and it made me understand how vulnerable we are.  I don't like being exposed to the poor driving habits of idiots who shouldn't have been given a driver's license to begin with.  :sauer005:

Glad you're okay.

A group of us from Maryland was in North Georgia this past weekend for the GA HOG rally, on Saturday a group of us rode wp to a RIB joint in TN when heading back on GA 17 South the 8th 0r 9th bike back in the group was hit head on by a bike that lost control going north i was 2 bikes back of the one hit the bike behind him flipped in front of me after hitting the downd horth bound rider, the bike directly staggered formation somehow missed everthing, Me and the rider behind me weaved through a debris field of 3 bikes and bodies wothout hitting anything, I account my fortune on some advanced skills classes ABS brakes and a lot of someone above looking out for me. The north bound rider was killed instantly and our 2 riders suffered only bumbs bruises and a lot of road rash, no broken bones, or major injuries.

Dear HR2004:

God bless and and congrats on keeping the dirty side down.

Defensive is the word, to be sure.  The cage ALWAYS wins.

I even changed my route home because of the jerks.  We have a shopping center off a four lane road.  Riding on the left "inside lane" I have had cars swerve into my lane because they are too lazy to slow down for traffic turning off into the shopping center from the right lane.  I always position myself away from their blind spot, but they NEVER look, esp. for a bike.

That's why I don't carry a weapon.  I swear I would be tempted to use it >:(

Again, I am happy for you.  If you have a gremlin bell, now is a good time to give it a little kiss for luck!  ;)

Regards,

Mark

I would say that this was the closest call I think I have ever had.  I had just entered S curve and a small bus had pulled out of an intersection after the jerk did one of those rolling stops and then realized I was there and stopped right in my lane.  I had a split second to make a move and honestly I don't recall thinking at all.  I applied a little to much rear brake and my rear tire started to slide.  I knew since I was right in the middle of the turn I didn't want to hit the front brake.  I honestly thought I was going to lay her down.  When I realized the bastard had stopped right in front I got back on the gas and pulled her back out of the slide and came around the front of the bus.  This happened so fast but I just knew I was going down.

Man I wish people paid attention to what they are doing!

Good job. A HUGE part of riding is being aware of your surroundings and you just saved your hide doing that.

In my opinion: ABS does not belong on a motorcycle, even worse are linked ABS brakes. (Getting that on my CVO limited). First item that I will disconnect.

I can see that ABS is good if the rider don't learn proper breaking and practice it regularly. In my opinion ABS is a crutch and it come in way to early (my guess is around 80% braking) so my actual brake distance is longer with ABS.

Looking the rear tire can easily be avoided but if you look it up, keep it looked, you will be fine. (I practice this regularly as well on a Police RK)

Locking the rear tire on a non ABS touring HD during emergency braking is very, very easily done especially on wet pavement or on dry pavement when loaded down with a passenger and luggage. Doing this can cause the bike to go down unless you quickly modulate the rear brake. Which is much harder to do on wet pavement in or in an emergency. I've said it before and I'll say it again....I'd never own another touring motorcycle without ABS!!

I agree. For a truly expert rider, ABS may be a bit of a nuisance. But for the REST of us - including me - it's a Godsend.

With its integrated electronics and hydraulics how do you plan to do this?

Glad to hear you're okay.  I can appreciate your experience.  The rear brake on my 2005 Electra Glide Classic would lock up routinely.  Although I didn't hear any one mention it in this thread, using the 'swerve' technique can be useful in some situations where there is an obstacle in your path of travel.  The swerve allows you to keep moving and avoids the obvious dangers of stopping unexpectedly on the roadway.  I know that it has saved me several times when another driver has moved into my lane without warning.  Of course, it's not always an option. :orange:

I don't know how, but since the ABS defaults to regular braking if it 'fails', you'd think that it would be possible.  :-\ spyder
