Retrofit possibility?
« on: August 31, 2013, 05:39:56 PM »

I think it would be possible to purchase the twin cooled lowers with radiators and fans, and install them on earlier bikes plumbed into the oil system. If successful, it would make for an excellent oil cooler system.

Just another random idea.

Heads too, or are you interested in just cooling the existing system?   Either way, I bet it'd work well.

Just the existing system, not the heads. Not planning on doing it, but I'm sure someone will. It's so obvious of an upgrade.

Couldn't agree more.  I'm willing to bet it makes its way into the P&A catalog eventually.

Would have to have different (new) thermostatic controls for the fans.  Or at least on/off switch.  The OE system is triggered by the temp sensors reading to the ECM.  Not a big deal though.  Would also want to make sure the flow rate for Harley's little water radiators isn't a bit restrictive for engine oil.  Probably not.  But would hate to find out the hard way.

I would do an on/off switch. No HD electric water pump, just the oil pump. On my '01 Ultra I ran a combo crash bar and oil cooler with no problems.

That would be my biggest concern. I would put the fans on a manual switch, if you are moving you may not even need the fans. It should really cool the oil down, but I'm not sure how much cooler the actual engine would run. But if you got just 20 degrees cooler in the heads and cylinders it would run better and should last longer.

Switching the fans by any of a couple methods isn't a worry, just a bit of extra work/creation in the process.  But the potential loss of flow rate and/or greater restriction I'd want to know about.  Wouldn't want to find out the hard way the various ways the gerotors might choke or cavitate if this really was an issue.

I have been thinking about this thread all morning. The idea is good but now I am also worried about flow rate and restrictions. I would not even consider something like this without a HIGH FLOW OIL PUMP and a Baisley spring to boost your pressure. Also how could you check flow rate at certain pressures? You would also need a thermostat to keep the colder thicker oil from taking the route of the radiators. I'm not saying it can't be done, but there is a lot of checking and plumbing to make it fly.

TOOOOOOO LATE!!!!!!! LMAO!!!!!!

Not that was obsessing just thinking. I would not do it to any of mine, but it seems like a good idea if it would work. But if it would work why has the MOCO not tried it????

That response to the potential systems problem would worry me too though Mike.  Since it is a system rather than just an individual issue of moving enough liquid.  On a bike with hydraulic tensioners what happens to those tensioner shoes if we start jacking up oil pressure (either because of a different pump or added restrictions in the system)?.
