incidents when while undeEngine dies when at Speed
« on: October 26, 2006, 12:05:21 PM »

;DI saw on this site that there have been reported incidents that engines quites while driving at speeds.  My wife's 2003 Road King Classic started having this problem several weeks ago.  We would be riding and her bike engine would just quite, no warning at all.  The speedometer would also quite working and the Odometer would not record miles.

The problem turned out to be a defective Vehicle Speed Sensor.  Had it replaced last week, picked up the bike yesterday and it ran great, no problems. ;D

Doesn't sound right to me. Yes the speedometer & odometer would be affected by a faulty VSS, and the TPS & MAP sensors are on same 5v reference line so they might start acting goofy, but the motor shouldn't just shut off.

My feelings exactly!  I've owned a bike with a speed sensor that went bad, and the only thing affected was the speedo.  ???

Napalm, when the bike shut down did you lose power to everything except the starter motor (lights, gauges, etc)?  If you did, that is an indication of a master circuit breaker / Maxi-fuse failure (all battery power except the starter runs through one or the other, I can't remember what year they changed from the circuit breaker to the Maxi-fuse).

I hate to sound like I'm correcting you Twolanerider, but Touring models started using a maxi-fuse in 2004.

No problem.  Always rather be informed than incorrect.  Thought I remembered changing the breaker on a buddy's Ultra that was an 04.  But it could've been an 03.  That's been in awhile.

That is why I come to this site frequently - to be informed.  If I have something informative, I try to pass it on.

Thought they took care of that in 2002 w/ the recalls? My 2001 Ultra was recalled. Maybe not? Symptoms are the same and there was a bunch recalled. One would think it would show up in the computer when it went in for repair.
