Second thoughts on a cam change.
« on: September 15, 2013, 09:10:24 PM »

I bought SE255 cams for a winter project on my 2011 Limited with the 103 power pack.  After reading about all the lifter failures i have second thoughts.  Now I'm concerned the quick ramping of the 255's may cause lifter wear.  I haven't read of any issues with the 103's with stock cams.  The SE 255's are reccommended for the baggers.
Does anyone have experiencee with this set up and is the valve trane quiet?

The early close of the 255 in a 103 usually results in lots of summer time pinging. It can be tuned out, but there are so many better choices.
Just my .02.

Now, I'll put you on the spot!
Did you try the 777 in your new bike yet?
What about the 54's I had in my 103? I'm thinking that would work pretty good in the '14 shower heads with that little bump in compression.
Am I on the right track?

looks at the Woods 555 cam or the S&S 551.  These are good mid range cams for touring bikes with stock compression

Ok.  That still doesn't answer my question about potential lifter failures?

The expert may have a different view, but I think the HD lifters are simply poor quality.  The quick ramp of the 255 may accelerate failures.  With you cam swap you should replace the lifters (suggest S&S) and cam bearings

I put the SE 255 cams in my new SG Special, and they work great!  I live in the mountains and wanted a low end power band.  That's what I got.
I guess everybody has to find a reason to put down these cams because the endless search for the ultimate cam just keeps on driving some.
If you like riding at 5,000& rpm most of the time, look somewhere else.

I used a set of HeadQuarters lifters, really took the noise out of the Woods cams I had in my 103".
And for the $40 a unit they sell for don't know why the stockers don't get changed out more... Cheap insurance imo.
Though S&S and Woods lifters are also quality items, just have first hand experience with the HQ..

Sitting in the dyno room patiently waiting for Tuning Software. I'm thinking .030 head gaskets and triple 8s!   :bananarock:

Is that a ShowerHead, Steve? 10:1 ain't high enough for ya? Those should kick it UP a notch! I'd like to see that run. Should we assume that you've fitted an X-pipe and baffles already? :2vrolijk_21:

X Pipe went on the first day. Lol.. Harley felt comfortable bumping the compression up. Lets add a little more, a 22 PSI cap and get those fans running!  :2vrolijk_21:

You might want to put on a rain suit for when those stock water hose clamps blow! I have read that there are some issues...

I purchased the cams already.  They make the torque where I want it.  What lifters are you using?

Stock lifters.
You know, my '08 USE3 runs like a top.  Stock 255 cams.  TTS canned map, Fullsac muffler guts, Dogherty Power PAC
A/C.
The "old" frame bike goes down the road with a noticeably smoother ride than the new bike.
The only reason I didn't go with another CVO is because of all the problems I've seen others have with their 110s.
-Seems to be the luck of the draw.  Many have had zero problems.  I don't think the cams are responsible for problems.

Ok.  That still doesn't answer my question about potential lifter failures?

The trends seem to suggest more lifter issues with the 110 motors. They run much heavier stock valve spring pressures than the 103s to deal with the additional weight of the much larger valves. "Maybe one of the head Gurus cam toss us some 103 VS 110 valve seat pressures". Quality lifters with any cam swap is the smart move with both motors. I'm partial to the Woods directional and S+S lifters. If you like to chug a lug the motor a lot between 2-3K rpm, with proper tuning to keep the pinging at bay, the 255s are good choice.
