Strange Question
« on: September 16, 2013, 04:58:54 PM »

My wife normally rides her own Harley (a Rocker C), however, her knees aren't great at the moment and so we we're talking about her coming on the back of my SE4. Problem is, if her knees are bad it might be easier for her if she got on the bike first and got off last.

Can the side stand take this, does anybody else do it this way?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

That's the only way my wife gets on (first), as she doesn't feel comfortable throwing her leg over the tourpak.  Didn't bother her on a previous Dyna where she had to throw her leg over a sissy bar.  :nixweiss:  Never had any sort of issue with the jiffy stand; it's stronger than it looks.

We finally figured out that it's a lot easier for my wife to get on the bike first, while it's on the jiffy stand. Then she brings my backrest up, I get on and straighten it up, and bring up the stand.

I've been told the jiffy stand is one of the strongest parts on the bike. Dont know if that's true... but it's plenty strong for the BSR to get on first.

Mounting from the right side would take the load off of the kickstand.
Have her try putting her RH foot on the RH passenger floorboard and then her left foot between the tour pack and the rider backrest.
Be sure that the bike doesn't flip over to the RH side.

YIKES! I see your point... but it's probably safer to mount from the left, since the bike's already leaning that way. Just make sure the jiffy stand isn't on something soft, and hasn't sunk into the ground. I carry one of those big pucks they use at the dealer and stick it under the jiffy stand when we park in asphalt or anything soft. It can be a pain to retrieve unless you tie a string to it or something.

Its always something... But nobody ever said riding a Harley would be a walk in the park!  :'(

What about getting the thing OFF the jiffy stand after the passenger is on?

Seems to me that the slightest incline/decline to the parking surface would present a problem, but that might just be because I'm on the short side of 5'9".

With the bike OFF the stand, my wife (after getting a verbal ok from me) puts her left foot on the left passenger board and simply grabs my shoulder to steady herself, steps up and over the seat - not the tourpack - has worked fine for us.

Ah, but there is the problem if her right knee is bad and she can't bend it.

Once the BSR has learned to keep their weight CENTERED on the bike, that can work fine. But I have almost lost it a couple of times when my BSR got on the bike and was NOT centered. It's pretty scary trying to hold up a 900 lb bike that is trying to go over, with another 165 lbs of off-center weight on it... given that I am only 5'9" and 165 myself!

If you are on the jiffy stand, you can turn the front wheel to the right to make it much easier to get it off of the stand.

I think the reason they are trained to mount/dismount from the right side is to keep them away from traffic after they have pulled you over and are parked on the shoulder of the road!

Getting on the DW gets on second, I put down the JS just for a little piece of mind. Getting off I get off first, it's easier for BSR. Been doing this for years with no ill effect on the JS, at least not yet.
