OK, I finally figured out why Harley has that feature where you turn on the ignition and open the throttle to more than 50%, then the fans and the pump operate.  This is used when filling and purging the air from the coolant system.  It wasn't intended that the customer do this on a regular basis after a ride.

The system is supposed to automatically keep the pump and fans running for up to three minutes after you shut the engine down, depending on coolant temperature.  If this part of the system isn't working, I could see where a one quart system could easily become over pressurized and blow coolant out the overflow.  If it's a design issue, as opposed to a defect in production parts that wasn't in the preproduction parts used in "testing", then it makes no sense that Harley didn't find and fix this long before they shipped the first unit to a dealership.  When I say it makes no sense, I mean that in terms of not making sense if in fact we were talking about a company that truly tests its products before releasing them to the public.  Based on recent history Harley doesn't have much of a reputation for catching the screw-ups in preproduction testing, leading many of us to assume they don't really do much testing or they don't have a clue how to design tests that will expose those defects.  Sad either way, and even sadder that they did it again on a relatively simple cooling system that they need to have the consumers embrace if they are to be able to continue selling their 110 year old design.

Jerry

As always we (the consumer) are the Motor Company R&D Team, the same team that ran with the 110 motor in late 2006 and early 2007. I'm still waiting for my paycheck for being part of the team.

It seems the plot is getting a little thicker. Through the grape vine, the problems are more than one. The leaking t stat and elbow at the water line. There are NO parts available at this time. The bigger problem seems to be two sensors that are fighting each other and as of today there is NO fix. The sensors that are the problem are the water coolant temp and the engine temp sensors. Also the manufacturing of the WATER HEAD may come to a stop until they find a fix.

Glad I didn't really want a new CVO!!!!!!

I believe it.  That would probably explain why my fans kick on when you wouldn't think they should and not when you do.

I wonder why some bikes have no problems....you would think if 2 sensors are fighting each other it would be on all of them.....

It is possible it's not fixed.  Mine went over 1350 miles before puking.  Who's to say it won't happen again?

Who can say abouf anything?

All I know is that my dealer replaced most of the cooling system parts including the sensors, That was close to 700 miles ago without a issue. I love the bike

I know, mine hasnt' puked since the dealer purged the system.  My coolant leve did drop in the bottle, but I added to it, ran the fans with the cap off, and I havent' had any issues since.  I too LOVE my bike. I just can't help be leery of if it's fixed or not. :)

I am not going to worry about it anymore. If for some reason It should leak again, I will address with my dealer; I really don't think it will give me anymore issues. The original leak happened at 80 miles and 300 miles on my bike. I am not at close to 1200 without another issue.
By the way, I snagged personal plates for my bike: WTRHEAD, kind of goes with your subject.

Early implementers always takes a risk but have greater rewards. (most of the time)

Life would be pretty boring without taking some chances, but then again some people are boring  :P

Scott right now not all of the bikes are having problems, but the Dealer where my friend works has delivered 5 water heads and all have puked. Some are setting waiting on parts or a fix. I'm not to get technical here but from what was explained to me made sense. At this time the engineers have no fix.

Where do you live and what is the ambient temp there?

I live in northern Calif., we have been in the low 80's.
I have actually tried to spend time in traffic, doing a lot of idling just to push the system. No issues at all.
My dealer fixed my bike by pulling the cooling system parts off a new bike that had just come in. They installed the parts on my bike. no more issues.

Got about 2000 miles on mine
No issues other than a loose connection at the coolant sensor.
Been in Palm springs at 100 degrees and on a couple short trips.
Liking the bike more each time!
Wife doesn't like the new seat so I put our old seat from the 2010 on it!
Go figure!
