Best exhaust for Touring Period????
« on: November 06, 2013, 08:09:13 PM »

 I have a Rinehart true dual system on my 110. Love the look and the sound of the system. However I think I can get more power and torque using a different system. I would like to stick with a two in to two system. don't like the way the two in to one looks. I would like to also use the Rinehart baffles that I already have. The are a 2 inch diameter, so don't know what systems can use the 2 inch baffle. So what is the best and a pipe that will make the most power for me.  Thanx for the info.

Most of the 2 into 2 systems are very close on H.P. and torque. Rinehart, Vance and Hines, Fuel Moto, Fullsac, all claim gains over stock with a cat. But between them, most are with in a couple of hp on a dyno. Unless you go to a 2 into 1 pipe, your gains by changing systems will be minimal.
For hp and torque gains 2 into 1 is the way to go.

There is no such thing as one single "BEST" exhaust system, unless you're an advertising copy writer for one of the exhaust system companies of course.  And if the only change you are making is the exhaust, you aren't going to see a significant difference from one to the other.  When you decide to transform that touring bike into a racer with the all out engine mod package, then the choice of exhaust may be significant.

If you like the look and sound of what you have, why waste money changing it for something that is unlikely to make a significant difference?  Trust me, a couple horsepower either way won't be noticeable from the saddle.

I'm a supporter of Fullsac. I've had both 2.00 and 2.25 cores in my original factory cans. Both made nice improvements over stock and are a terrific "bang for the buck". But ultimately I wanted more than a core upgrade could deliver. If what you are looking for is significant Tq and HP improvement to accompany engine mods, then a 2:1 is the best path. And based on most dyno data, D&D's Fatcat delivers the most Tq and HP.

A 2:1 may not be everyone's "cup of tea" on a touring bike, but the facts are the facts. A 2:1 will always deliver more power than a true dual or 2:1:2 and the FatCat is the best of the best in 2:1 exhaust. Add a FatCat "ghost pipe" and you'll have the best of both worlds but its not cheap. Anyone suggesting a 2:2 or a 2:1:2 can deliver similar power to a 2:1 simply hasn't run both.

I spoke with the MoCo Engineers in person on two different occasions when we were spec ing out the SE motor in the '01 Switchblade.
Their reply;
"Ed, if you want the big numbers out of it, put on a 2 into 1"

 I just did a hole bunch of engine work, Head porting, cylinder boring, 10.5-1 comp, S&S 585 gear drives, Crank welding bearings, and truing, High flow oil pumping, Roller rockers, lifters. Hat it dynoed using a power commander. Came out with 108 hp and 118 FPT.  I thought I would get a bit more from the build.  ( 115 HP and 125 fpt ) I am thinking of changing out the Rinehart true dual system.  So with one of those Fat Cats, what could my gain be? And how loud are they? How much more with the Fat Cat compared with the Fulsac? And can I use my 2 inch ( inlet ) mufflers with the Fulsac?  These are all very good questions here guy's.  ;)

Rough estimate around 115hp and 120+ftlbs. To get more you'll need larger TB and larger injectors. Just my rough guess.

A Fatcat exhaust will replace the entire exhaust system including the head pipe. Be forewarned that a 2:1 exhaust will not have a traditional Harley "sound". A Fatcat is loud and sounds somewhat like a small block Chevy with solid lifters. It will definitely stand out when it starts up. But if max performance is what you seek out of your engine build investment, then a Fatcat is the exhaust you want.

My brother did heads, flat top pistons and Woods 777 cams on a 103 with Reinhart 2-2 and Reinhart mufflers. Came out at around 100/108.

He saved up some cash and installed a 58mm throttle body. Now around 110/117. He said its like night and day. He thought about adding a 2-1 based on shops recommendations. They said he would be around 113/120 but he loves the sound of a 2-2 system over a 2-1 system.

Throttle body is definitely a big plus. While exhaust can add a couple of points it's really a preference of sound for him.
