It is only happening on the front pipe for whatever thats worth. was tuned by Bob at RC Cycles so I don't believe it can be the tune, Runs fantastic. Did D&D replace the shield for those of you that called them? If they do, I will try the wrap under the clamp. Though it does piss me off that it happened, I love the performance/sound of the pipe and if I had to make a choice, I would still get them. With that said though, I do expect them to stand behind their product and replace that shield. Will see how this goes. I am just stupid enough that if they don't I will buy another shield and try the wrap underneath. I am too old now to "cut of my nose"...
I get that doesn't make it (or me) right...
Wow it's happening on the front pipe too? Lame. :-\

Looks very much like the material I used. I just located the clamp areas for the heat shields and wrapped just those places and used a small piece of tape to hold it in place. Then put the heat shield over it and remove the small tape pieces before tightening the clamps up. Seems to have stopped the discoloration that he was getting. Do not know if it changed the heat on the leg any but he was happy.

D&D was very cool about it. They said to send a picture and they would send out a new shield. I already talked to my guy and we are going to do the "wrap" underneath the clamp on the new one. Thanks

Yes they were "cool" about it but did they say they were going to correct the problem? They have sent me 2 shields already that doesn't correct the problem on their end. I guess I am a lot more disappointed with my $1400 purchase then you guys.

I believe that all the cloth style wrap is a fiberglass base material, then dyed to give it color. I do not think that the color holds up to the heat as I have seen it change colors, going back to the base color of white as well. Still seems to work the same but the color is gone. The reason I do not wrap the whole pipe is then it acts like a blanket to the pipe. The heat has nowhere to go and it then just get hotter on the pipe itself. So by leaving an open area you give the heat a place to get out and not act like a blanket but more like a heat shield.

One other thing about cloth style wraps is that your pipe underneath the wrap will rot away over time. The cloth holds moisture as it cools off which allows the moisture to sit against the metal until it warms up again. This constant cycle of moisture then heat against the pipes causes the rotting to happen. Some people believe that a SS pipe solves the issue but most of the HD pipes that are made are out of a low grade SS and it really doesn't stop the rotting when wrapped. In the automotive world most if not all header manufactures will void there warranty if the pipes are fully wrapped for this very reason.

I thought I would ask 1 more time. New shield should be in next week and I want to get the correct wrap to go underneath to give to the tech installing it for "best chances" of it not happening again.

I don't know which wrap is best as I bought mine at an auto parts store. I can't remember the name but it was the same brand as the special ties you put at beginning and the end. Seems like DFI or something like that it was black when I installed it and now almost white.

I think most of the cloth type ones are the same other than the color. I've used the 2" wide stuff you pick up at an autoparts store but never paid any attention to the brand name on it.

I believe the brand name is DEI, IIRC. Sorry to see you guys having this problem. I have not seen this issue anywhere other than here yet. What about buying a good rattle can of BBQ ceramic paint and shooting the headers? I do this sometimes on 2-1 pipes on the inside of the collector and muffler body before tuning on the dyno (depends on build) to discourage yellowing of the muffler where it slips on to the collector. Works great!

I'm sure there is a fix but my point is after dropping $1400 on the pipe and dummy pipe I shouldn't have to worry about a lack of a quality finish.
