I recently came back from Palm Springs. Heading up hwy 111 traffic came to a quick stop. As I slowed down I quickly checked my mirror to find the car behind me was not slowing down!!! I didn't want to throw my wife off the back so I gave it some gas and let the clutch out fast enough to get out of the way and around the car in front of me, then heard the screeching of the car tires!!! Thank God we weren't going to fast. I kept going as I didn't think it would look good assaulting an elderly lady!!

Since being rear ended back in 1982 I ALWAYS look in the rear view mirror when I come to a stop of any kind, not just a panic stop.  Way too many idiots and morons on the roads these days doing everything in their cars but watching the road.

I try to stay in the habit of checking the mirrors frequently while riding / driving, not just slowing down.

I also flash the brake lights when slowing, and when stopped at a light, I flash the brake lights until the vehicle behind me is completely stopped.

'Gotta get off of some $ and get some of the self flashing brake lights...

There's all kinda idiots out there...

I saw a new driver over here in Korea hit two vehicles within half a mile. One was a truck and the other was me. Both instances they were only light taps with the bumper but still it is always good to be aware of your surroundings. Thanks for reminding me.

A similar thing happened to me in June, except I didn't get out of the way in time.  $11,000 and a broken foot  were bad, but it would've been much worse I if hadn't started moving out of the way.

Head-on or from the rear would be the 2 worse case scenarios I could think of. When riding in twos, and stopped, it is very easy for me to start talking to the rider beside me and completely forget about traffic approaching from behind. That's why they put the mirrors there. Great job of defensive driving!!!

  I was rear ended a week ago on the Interstate ... Luckily I was in my F-250, just bumper and tow package damage, the car that hit me was totaled.

Almost as bad as heading towards LA doing 70 on the Interstate following a truck. Traffic stopped suddenly, truck had no brake lights!!! First time on a bike with ABS brakes.....they proved themselves.
