Paying Florida Sales Tax on Purchase of Used Motorcycle
« on: November 22, 2013, 08:03:24 PM »

I recently flew up to North Carolina and bought a used motorcycle.  I paid no sales tax there.  I rode the bike back to Florida on temporary tags issued by the owner who is also a car/bike dealer.  Since I took possession of the bike out of Florida, am I exempt from paying Florida sales tax on the purchase when I go to the DMV to change the title and register the bike in Florida?   Does anyone know?

You gonna pay Fla. The reason the NC Dealer did not charge you tax is vehicle tax is paid in State of residence. Most DMV's use the book value, unless you tell them you paid more(duh). They did this because many people were saying they gave $500.00 for it.

The tax man cometh. You'll pay the tax when you register it in your home state.

yep, you're gonna pay.  be glad you aren't in la.  if you paid sales tax at time of purchase, and it is lower than what you would have paid here, they get you for the difference before they'll give you tags.....

They will charge you tax on what you paid.  If your bill of sale documents $500.00, that's what you will pay tax on.  Soooooooooo, common sense may allow you to pay a more reasonable amount of tax - if you catch my drift.

The good thing about being an Old Fart in SC, where I am 'offically' a resident. They cap all out of state purchases at $300, really pays off if you buy a $30k scoot!!!

One of the only advantages of living in Illinois is no sales tax on used motorcycles - just a small fee ($25.00 or something)...

Arizona is the same.  No sales tax on used privately purchased vehicles.  If you purchase a used vehicle from a dealer, then you pay the tax.
