Possible recall on the new wet bikes for cam issue
« on: December 10, 2013, 08:18:30 PM »

OK, get the flame throwers out and toast me because I read it on the internet so it must be true right?

Guy on a FB RG page claims to be a GM at a dealership (he has his employer listed as a dealer in VA). States he has two brand new wet bikes that won't idle due to cam issues. Says to expect a recall on them soon.

Any of our new limited owners experiencing this?

Thoughts?

CVO has same cams as previous models, SE255's. Actually nothing is different except for the heads on the 110. I have a set of 2014 CVO 255 cams with 4 miles on them forsale. $150 if anyone is interested.  :2vrolijk_21:

I assure you the 2014 110 has 255 cams. I have a set laying on the bench out of mine. The 103's do not.

All 2014 Touring 103's (wet or dry versions) have the same part number cams which are a new for 2014 grind, but the 110's still have the SE255 cams.  Since the cams are the same for wet and dry versions of each engine, I don't see why the "dealership GM" would think it's a cam problem if the only bikes with the idle problem are Twin Cooled bikes.  Time for another theory perhaps?  Maybe the coolant leaking into the cylinders through a porous head casting is screwing up the idle? ;)

I asked the guy and he said it's only on the FLHTKSE models that they're having trouble with.

I asked the guy and he said it's only on the FLHTKSE models that they're having trouble with.

He's got a potential issue there too as the same cames are used on the FLHTKSE as are used on the FLHRSE.  So the same cam in current use on a same displacement engine.  The same standard old 255s that have been used in 110s for a long time.

The Road King isn't water cooled of course.  So there is a distinct combination of the 255s in the water cooled 110.  But it seems a stretch....  Will be curious to watch and see how or if this actually plays out.

If there was an problem with new cams causing an idle issue, I'm thinking it would be a manufacturing problem with how they were timed.  Sprockets misaligned, or chains installed wrong. For the scooters to run, but not idle, the list of cam issues would be a short one.

They've probably not quite recovered yet since they last time they had to give away a boat load of cylinder heads (and many other parts) in 07-08....

Have had a few issues with the 103 wet head bike . Thus far it seems that there is some issue with the temp sensors creating a issue with the ECm as the sensors read off from one another. Not a bad idle but some what as well timing issue where you can get them to spark knock with a flick of throttle while bike is sitting still.. This can be seen on the data log as well.  Several updates are due out.. We have seen a few with the tuner already not sure what dealer to end user update would be.. I would think they will deal with it on a case by case at the dealer. With a new download/ update cal. Increasing speed rating vs fan shut off. timing changes..  Hey its a new model new ecm etc what did anyone think was going to happen.. That it would be spot on and no issues  :D  Have another here now that is leaking coolant on the floor.. It's had the recall .......... TWICE  ha ha , thermostat housing leaking this time again.. as well top line is cracked and flopping around on rocker box. Its got 758 miles on it.

Which recall has been performed twice already? Only recall I've seen is the clutch which has nothing to do with the leaks. :)

There are issues with the 2014 Touring software air and water cooled both, period. We reported this when we released our product and have been waiting for HD to issue some updates to fix the problems, so far nothing. I personally called people I still know at HD and made them aware of just what is happening and provided them with a bunch of information to help them track it down. They said new software would be coming out but were still waiting like everyone else. Nothing new out as of today, so it's still wait and see.

There are no recall or upcoming Camshaft recalls coming that I have heard of. The 255 is a proven cam that would not cause these issues..

Now since were on the subject of recalls there have been one (the clutch issues) and another is coming for the radiator fill neck!
The fill neck is being replaced with a new design for the bikes that are pissing out fluid through the overflow. Mine was done last week since they just got the parts in from big daddy HD.

Here is a link to my service recalls on Harley's website:

I'd tend to agree with GMR Steve and TTS Steve. Sounds much more probable that it would be a tuning, ECM or sensor issue. I'm sure SC has a lot better idea of what is going on than he cares to expand on. As a TTS dealer Id like to hear if you feel like explaining though, Steve. Frank Drago and I were discussing this just a few days ago. He said he had talked to you but he didn't go into any detail on the issues. Is it something going on in the tables we can't see?
