Garmin 660
« on: December 27, 2013, 03:53:17 PM »

I have the Road tech 660 and I put a micro SD card in it and loaded up the card with music but it will not play! Seems to me I remember reading somewhere that one of the pins needs to be covered to fake out the radio or the GPS.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks

there are a couple of issues that could cause this.

First, do you have it muted?  open up your volume control to check there.

If it's not that simple, pull the unit from the mount and see if the music plays through the built in speaker, and check back.

Good luck.

OK, we'll start with dumb questions, but is your 3.5mm aux cable securely connected on each end?

From the wire loom of the 660 mount to the front of the radio on the bike.  You might want to drop a description of your particular set-up just to make sure we're on the same page here.

I have a 13 Screaming Eagle Ultra and the 660 is mounted on the dash from the factory. I can hear directions from the 660 through the bike speakers but if I put the bike radio on AUX I cannot hear the music even though the 660 shows that it is playing.

If I take my old Zumo 550 and just hold it in the bike mount with power to it and the 3.5 mm cable plugged into the front of the radio I can hear the music from it.

Hope this helps! I know I read somewhere about this feature being "locked" out on the screaming eagles for some reason.

Lew,

doesn't plugging into the bike mount by pass the external speaker?  When in the mount you can use the headphone jack to the jack input on the HK or buy the internal wiring kit.

Correct, Owl.  I just wanted to make sure the music was playing and was not muted.  By ensuring it would play through the built in speaker, we eliminated a lot of internal stuff.

Now we need to trace it further down the line.  This kind of thing is usually something easily overlooked.  But it's easier to follow a few steps to isolate through simple troubleshooting than to try to throw darts at what it could be from bad fiels on the unit to a blown head unit on the bike.

Road Tech 660 MP3 music to bike speakers
« Reply #7 on: January 02, 2014, 11:24:31 AM »

I found this thread http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=86301.0 but it really does not answer my question.

I have a 2013 FLHTCUSE8 that came with the Road tech 660. I put an SD card with music on it in the 660 and the music plays. When I put the 660 into the mount on the bike I cannot hear the music from the 660. In scrolling through the options on my radio I have the following;

AM
FM
XM
CD
Weather
IPOD

No AUX option.

My question is how do I get the music that is on my 660 to play through the bike speakers? I know I can use the ipod to listen to music but it only holds 8 GB and it does not hold its place in a playlist when the IPOD goes without bike power for 20 minutes or more. It always starts over at the very first song on the IPOD. Very aggravating indeed!

I was thinking of running a cable from the output jack of the 660 to the AUX input on the front of the radio but I am afraid that option might not work either since the radio itself has no AUX option on the menu.

Thanks for they help!

It won't register unless something is plugged in.

As I just mentioned in the other thread, you need to have something plugged in to the aux jack for it to register on your menu.

Your bike does not come factory wired to hear MP3 or a phone call. It is only wired to allow you to hear turn prompts via the NIM.

To be able to hear the music or a phone call you must install a Y Splitter and a 3.5mm stereo male to 3.5mm stereo male cable.

Split the audio output from the GPS using the Y Splitter, connect the NIM back up to the Y Splitter and the from the splitter use the male to male cable to tie in to the Auxiliary Input on the radio.

You can find more information on doing this at

Jim

Thanks for the input and the directions. Over lunch hour I played with this some more and learned that if I run a cable from the front of the radio to the output on the 660, not on the mount but on the 660 itself. I can hear my music.

I know this works for the music but am not certain if the 660 will shut the music down to give me a turn direction through the radio speakers. I tried to select someplace to go on the GPS but being in the garage I had no signal. It simulated signal and I input take me to nearest dealer.

The music quit for about 20 seconds and then came back on but I could not hear the directions.

If I understand you correctly I need to do this:  Unplug the factory plug that is on the GPS mount (in the dash) and put a Y connector into the GPS mount then plug the factory cable into the Y as well as another cable going to the front of the radio?

Thanks again

First check you volume setting on the Zumo you have 3. Goto "Menu" select "Volume", "Master Volume", "Mixer", you will see Master, Navigation, Media make sure all 3 are set to 100%.

The audio output from the GPS is now connected to the Navigation Interface Module (NIM). Disconnect it and connect the male from the splitter to the female coming from the GPS (the splitter has 1 male and 2 female connectors). Connect 1 of the female connectors on the splitter to the NIM, which you just disconnected. Connect the 3.5mm male to male cable between the remaining female connector on the splitter and the Auxiliary Input on the radio. Play a song and adjust the volume on the bike to your liking. The radio has to be in the AUX mode to hear. When a turn prompt is present the GPS will mute the MP3 music and you should hear the turn prompt, the music will resume when it left off when the turn prompt is finished. When the radio is in the AUX mode the NIM becomes redundant as every thing (MP3, Turn Prompts, Phone Calls) comes directly from the GPS and the GPS controls which has priority.

Make sure to use electrical tape and secure all the connections so the do not come apart.
