HD Ins??
« on: January 16, 2014, 05:20:37 PM »

Looking to change insurance company, from brand XXX to HD which is really Progressive. Would like to hear the Pro/Con from those with the HD Ins.
I was on vacation and all set to rent, a ride only to fine out that my carrier wouldn't cover the rental.
Thanks

I had Progressive for years never had a claim so I can't tell you how they handle the claims.  I was told when I signed up with them that towing would cover unlimited miles to the closest shop only to find out when I was on the side of the road stranded that they would tow to the closest shop which just happened to be a car repair shop.  If I wanted it towed to the closest Harley store it would cost me $4 a mile after the first 15 miles. I told them like hell some car tech was working on my $35k motorcycle when a Harley dealer was about 40 miles. I was out of state and couldn't afford to have someone scratching their head trying to figure out what was going on.   I was so mad I hung up and limped the bike into Harley at 18mph. Customer service jerked me around and never could produce anything in print that told me 15 miles was the limit. I canceled my insurance with them.

Plug for great dealer experience: Alefs Harley in Wichita Kansas stayed late waiting for me to arrive and had the wiring issue resolved in about 45 minutes. I filled expected this to cost me a bundle and they charged me $52.

H-D insurance is not an insurance company but an insurance agency - they place you with carriers.  Haven't talked with them in several years but back then at least they did have several carriers to quote on your coverage.  Never been fond of Progressive myself.  Had them for one year abougt 10 or 12 years ago.  No tickets, no claims and the renewal was out of sight.  So switched and never looked back.  Been with Foremost for many years now and they have treated me A-OK.  Had a couple claims that were handled promptly and to my complete satisfaction.  And in spite of that their rates were good.  I highly recommend them.

Had been with Flo for less than 6 months, when I turned in a claim for over $5k of hail damage on my F-250. She hooked me up quickly, professionally, fairly, and went the extra mile to fix some aftermarket stereo gear that was damaged to water intrusion. I am very happy with Progressive so far...

been with them  for about 12 yrs.  rates have always been good, and have had 3 claims in that time.  none of them were accidents, and i was treated more than fairly.  the claims were handled quickly.  i once checked the rates between hd ins (progressive) and going directly to progressive.  going direct to progressive was about $100 year more.

Have been with several carriers, a few years back was with Progressive.  They did not remain competitive in this market.  Am now with Allstate & they are several hundred $$s less per year (on 2 bikes apples to apples coverage vs Progressive).

Does not hurt to shop around as long as you stick to higher rated companies.

I went with Sentry through the agent Dairyland.  Rates were half of Progressive.  One claim on a destroyed tour pak, paid in full and quickly.

As someone noted already, the insurance Harley pushes isn't from any one single company.  They are just like any other independent insurance agent, they line you up with one of several companies.  These days I question why you would want to include a middle man like H-D in your insurance coverage when you can go directly to the various companies that do business in your state and get quotes directly on the internet.  You may assume H-D would look out for you and get you the best rate, but that would be a very foolish assumption.

Progressive used to be the best company for motorcycle insurance in my state by far, but several years ago they jacked their rates up exponentially and I bid them farewell.  Then I had Foremost, which offered excellent coverage at the best price for a few years, whereupon they also decided to do a little profiteering and I bid them farewell.  At present GEICO has the best combination of coverage and price in my area.  The point I'm trying to make is that you need to do your homework every year and the internet makes it so much easier to compare coverage and prices there is no excuse to just stay with one company and let them screw you.  Have you ever wondered how all those insurance companies can make the same claims about saving you XXX dollars if you switch to them?  It's easy, they all offer a lower price the first year and then the creeping rate inflation sets in.  Even though the value of the car or bike goes down each year and therefore their exposure for repair and replacement decreases, the premiums rise steadily.

You need to check coverage details and prices for your specific state and locality, rather than ask folks from across the country what they think.  Each company sets rates by states and even by zip codes, and often have differences in coverage by location as well.

I went with HD/Progressive about 2yrs ago, because of rates($247 cheaper on 2 scoots). Have not had a claim. Had Farmers before and had one claim and they were great(but thats why I had insurance). Would not negotiate rates, so Bye-Bye.

Right on the money (pun intended, lol).  I check every year and if I could save I would switch in a heartbeat.

Had Progressive for a year and they jacked up the rates after the first year.  I switched to Dairyland and their rates are half that of what Progressive was.  I can't speak for claims (haven't had one yet thank goodness), but Dairyland gave me the best rates (that is being a HOG member and an MVP member at my local Harley dealer).

I've had HD Insurance for years...but with Dairyland. Couldn't be happier and their claim service is fair and fast.

like i mentioned above, i compared the rate that i got through hd, and the rate that quoted going directly through progressive.  in my case, it was about $100 cheaper to go 'through the middleman', than it was to go directly through progressive.  exact same coverage and limits.

I also have progressive through an agent, Leslie Kay. It was also 100 dollars cheaper than going directly to Progressive. I don't have any claim history.
