A new secret way???
« on: November 21, 2006, 05:21:47 PM »

Picked up the SEEG from the 10,000 mile service and they adjusted the steering stem and changed the fork oil according to my invoice. My question is how can you do this without removing the Bat wing faring, because it was never taken off. My secret piece of tape told me so.

I'm not sure about the neck bearings on a fairing bike, but the oil can be injected by syringe thru the drain plug hole (premeasured). Hoist!

In two words THEY CAN'T!

It is possible to use the syringe method but I seriously doubt the delaer would do so. There is NO WAY to do the neck bearings with removing the fairing, radio, and all wire and cables. To properly perform the "fall away" test the cables and wiring must be removed as well or they will give false readings.

Looks like you'll be having a friendly conversation with the service manger >:(

If you could let us know where you placed this piece of tape. It would be interesting to see how many dealers are really doing what they say. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Pretty simple, a small piece of Scotch transparent tape across the right side upper faring screw hole.

Gee, you think that's why we all still have WOBBLY BIKES, even after the neck bearings have been "adjusted?"  [smiley=sauer005.gif] [smiley=nixweiss.gif] [smiley=sauer055.gif]

jimp,
Gotta love your style dude, but don't it make you boil. I neve would have thought about the secret tape idea, but you can bet your a$$ I will if I need to in the future. I had a similar experince. I left a set of Screamin Eagle platinum plugs 5 qts of AMSOIL and 1qt of AMSOIL trans fluid in my saddlebags for a 10k service. Written on the invoice "Spark plugs and fluids in saddlebags". Got the bike home and it was dirty so I put it up on the lift. First thing I noticed was regular plugs and not the Screamin Eagles. Pulled the air cleaner cover and the K&N was dirty. Put a stick in the fluid areas and put a drop on a white card along side some Syn 3 - - perfect match. AMSOIL is a lot darker than Syn 3  Went nuts on the service manager. Now here's the good part. This particular wrench was known as a pack rat around the shop. He saved everything. He should have had 4oz of AMSOIL left in a bottle. He claimed to have thrown it out, but at his work station were a dozen bottles of oil and other fluids with only a oz or two in them. Also, brand new set of Screamin Eagle platinum plugs on top of his tool box. He claimed the stock plugs were better and he was doing me a favor. Long story short, they redid the service free, refunded my money from the first time. Bought the AMSOIL and put it in along with a new K&N air filter even though the old one was not bad just dirty and they gave it to me. I told the service manager I would hate to see the tech fired because of it but I never wanted to see him near a motorcycle of mine again. ( he didn't get fired) Now they do things right the first time and my bikes are always returned clean and shiny. Don'y know how you're going to prove your point if they don't buy the secret tape thing. Good luck to you and let us know how it turns out. Thanks again for the idea. Sucks we have to do stuff like that but that's the way of it with flat rate shops.

Maybe they saw the secret tape and repalced it ?  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Yeah right!

My experience is that there is nearly always some 'seepage' of the lube for the first week or so after it's done, almost looks like the forks are leaking slightly since it conveniently drips down one side or the other. With the Cabo-Wabo wobble problems some are having, and the realtionship to proper servicing, this one is more serious than most.

Definitely someting for the service manager to address. [smiley=sauer007.gif]

Man I wish I would have read this first. As HD-DUDE said THERE IS NO F%$KING WAY to perform that service without the removal of the outer fairing. If thay did tighten the neck bearing without doing the fall away test that is one thing but to downright lie about it is BS. I will bet they pay their techs FLAT RATE!!!!

What ever you do DON'T TELL THEM ABOUT THE TAPE. Keep that as your ace in the hole. Let them bring the tech to you and let him explain what he did and how he did it. Then ask him about the tape and let him tell you where it was.

Be Safe

I can assure you, no tape needed for hd-dude.
The best thing you can do for him is pay him more than he ask because no matter what he charges your getting more than he charges for!
