Ignition Switch Issue
« on: February 24, 2014, 09:58:10 AM »

Yesterday I was out for a short ride and stopped for lunch. I locked the bike with the remote but when I came back out the remote would not unlock the bike so I tried to unlock the ignition switch with the key. Inserted the key and turned it slightly and the whole switch came loose and popped up out of the housing. Managed to get it back in and seated, tried the remote again several times and it finally unlocked. Now the switch feels loose like it may pop out again. Anything I can do or is a trip to the dealer in order?

BTW, the remote has always been finicky, locks okay but it usually takes several tries to unlock, maybe the battery in the remote is weak.  :nixweiss:

I have similar issues. My switch has never come out, but I regularly have to put pressure to the locked position of the switch before the remote will unlock it. I am kind of relating it to how a vehicle sometimes wont allow the ignition to turn unless you apply slight pressure on the steering wheel. I have messed around with both remotes and new batteries but still have the issue. My bags and trunk lock and unlock correctly but the ignition is funky at times.

I have noticed that I sometimes have to push the bars to full lock left to get the ignition switch to unlock with the remote.  I suspect that when parked (even with it is full lock left position) that there is some 'pressure' on the mechanism that must be relieved in order for it to move and unlock.

But the switch coming out and not being loose most likely means it needs to be replaced.  I seem to recall others having similar problems so you might want to do a search.   :2vrolijk_21:

I've had this issue as well but only after the dealer has had the switch out. Seemed like it wasn't engaged correctly after reinstallation. I was able to get to lock in after playing around with it. Since then I have removed it a number of times myself with no issue. After studying the CUSE8 supplemental service manual I found that the procedure is different for the power-lock version versus the non PL version. I'm not sure that the dealer was aware of this because when I questioned them they seemed to scratch their heads.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you need more specifics from the manual.

There have been several issues re. ignition switches over the years.  If not installed correctly they will "pop" off.  I would take it to the dealer unless you have the maintenance manual and are handy.  My remote is touchy.  Seems to be picky re. where I hold it relative to the position along the bike.

I have the service manuals, I'll take a look to see what the procedure is. What concerns me is that there may be a design or quality issue that caused the switch to pop off initially. As mentioned, my remote is very particular where it is relative to the receiver on the bike. I guess the proven technology that all the automakers use was too good to copy. My truck remote is good for 40 yards away from inside a building, I have to hold my HD remote no more than 3 feet away and just in front of the tour pack on the right side for it to work.

That's exactly what I need to do!  Even changed batteries thinking they were weak.  Made no difference.

150 miles from the house yesterday. Stoped at resturant for lunch, came out and remote wouldn't unlock. put key in switch and it tried to come off. After ten minutes messing with switch, handle bar position and cussing fit I got it unlocked with ignition on. Taking it in for warranty FIX tomorrow. Kinda irritating when something like that happens that far from the house on a NEW 40K MOTORCYCLE. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I had the same issue, 150 miles from home and stopped for lunch. Used the remote to lock and came back it would not unlock. I used the key to unlock and the ignition lock switch came up and spun freely without unlocking the bike. Could not move the handlebars and thought I was in need of a trailer. I messed with the remote locking and unlocking and at the same time pushed down on the cover/switch and finally got it back together and unlocked. Took it in to the dealer and he showed me what fails and did nothing to replace or repair the switch, just told me to be careful. Good luck.

Typical.  I'd suggest you contact the MoCo directly and insist they fix it correctly.  If you have to "be careful", or wait until the stars are aligned, or any other BS besides press the button or turn the key to unlock your bike, then it's a defect plain and simple.  Would you accept that kind of response if your car wouldn't unlock reliably?

I agree with Jerry,  WTF! If you are in the middle of no where and forget to "be careful" and it fails for good what are you going to do?  Insist that it is replaced or fixed correctly.

This happened to a guy in our group a on fairly new Road Glide when we were trying to leave Devil's Tower last August. It was a PIA and he was pretty upset because it was the 3rd time or so it had happened and they claimed it was fixed!

Hey Jesse.  I sure remember that day.   They had to replace that switch when he got back.  I'm glad we didn't have to leave him there stuck.  The new switch really is a cheap pos. Stuart.  :nixweiss:
