Mods with warranty.
« on: February 25, 2014, 10:44:01 PM »

Let's me start with I have the 2014 CVO limited. Also have the extended warranty for 7 years. (This is a Harley warranty not from another company). With my last bike I de-catted the head pipe and installed 2" baffles along with a TTS tuner. ( I did not uninstall the tuner when I sold it). So, how far can I modify the exhaust without adding another tuner? I would rather not give harley a reason to deny me a repair because of something I did. And wonder if anyone has done a Vance&hines tuner that would be easy to remove if something came up?

Adding any non-OEM parts can cause a warranty denial.

I am good friends with one of the best tuners out there who happens to work at a dealer.  Dave's made it clear that their dealer will cover their work.  I've got a Rampage lift to haul my bike up to PA whenever I need it.

I still have a set of mufflers with 2" baffles and another set of 2 1/2. Just saying.

You have two warranties.  The first two years are the HD manufacturer's warranty.  It is controlled by both CA and Federal laws both of which provide that after market parts and modifications absolutely do not void your warranty.  Only if the manufacturer can show your modification caused the failure can it dishonor it's warranty and then only for that particular failure.  This is not to say that HD won't claim so.

Your second warranty is really a contract of insurance and the parties (you and HD) are bound by it's terms.  These insurance contracts generally provide that any modification or non OEM parts void the contract. Did you read your fine print?

So what you are saying is HD does not have an extended warranty but another company is covering the bike? My dealer today stated they only sell HD warranties covered by HD.

You should look at this. I asked the same thing about a week or so ago. Here is the link to all the info I got. http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=92107.0 it was good to have everyone give there two cents and then figure out things

This is a common misconception.

Harley's warranty covers a stock bike, period.  Harley is under no obligation to warranty another manufacturer's parts.  Harley is also under no obligation to warranty parts that have failed when aftermarket performance parts are used.  If you install something on your bike that is sold with the "for off-road use only" or a similar disclaimer, you're kissing your factory warranty goodbye.

Dealers may work with you and cover stuff, but they're under no obligation to do so.  The Magnuson-Moss Act, despite internet claims to the contrary, does not compel a dealer or manufacturer to fix your bike after you've added a ton of performance stuff to it.  What it says is that a dealer or manufacturer can't force you to use their maintenance products in order to maintain a warranty unless they're provided to you free of charge.

Or not get the ESP and maintain it in/as close to stock until after 2 year warranty is over and do what you want with/to it. :nixweiss:

I would stick to minor mods like exhaust and tune during the factory warranty period, and be smart about it by doing stuff that could be easily returned to stock if necessary.  For instance, I like the idea of the Fullsac cores installed in the stock muffler cans.  I also like the idea of using a tuning package that lets you easily return the ECM to stock without leaving a marker that Harley could use to deny warranty coverage.  TTS is one such package, I believe PV may be another, SEPST is NOT.

Ultimately it all comes down to your tolerance for risk.

I agree, but for those that are concerned about "some" warranty at all then waiting until the MoCo original warranty is out is an option. :nixweiss:

This is a common misconception.

With respect to Mr. Train, I stated no misconception, common or otherwise. I did not say that the Harley warranty must cover aftermarket parts. I did say and it is true that aftermarket parts or modifications do not void your warranty unless they cause the failure for which the customer claims is under warranty.

Example: You add a Stage 1 kit with A/C, tune and pipes.  Later, your transmission fails.  Unless Harley can prove that the "massive power gains" from your Stage 1 kit caused the failure, they must repair the transmission.  If your heated grips fail, of course you still have your warranty.  Also of course, your initial HD warranty does not cover parts added after your purchase.  How could it?

Fireguy i'm in the same position as you are with buying a 2014 CVO Limited wanting the warranty but also wanting to do exhausted and headers. I realize after speaking with everybody on here that I'm just going to go ahead and do what I want to the bike and at the end of the day hope for the best. A great majority of people by the bikes put exhaust on the and the bike and go through the life of the bike without any problems. now unfortunately the Internet is going to focus on the great majority that do have the problems but you're not going to hear as much about everybody that did not have any problems I would say you're okay get the exhaust and call it done.
