Changing Fork Oil With a Mityvac
« on: November 23, 2006, 09:13:43 AM »

I thought I read somewhere that you can change out the fork oil on an "05 SEEG  with a Mityvac. I have the version that will pressure up as well as draw a vacum. Can someone enlighten me on this>> Thanks as always>> Greg

Never heard of it.  Did mine the old fashioned way.  Brought it to Jim's (HD-Dude) and he took the front end apart...

You used to be able to do that with a vacuum pump and a tool sold by Snap On, where you apply a vacuum through the air lines in the front end (at the top) and suction the fluid in through the bottom of the leg.  Long gone.  The newer bikes have a sealed type tube,  so what goes in one way,  comes out the other and there's no cheating..........Best way is to dissassemble the front end and do it right.

Nice HAMMER Jim! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I was waiting for someone to comment on that Chip ;D. When I first saw the pic I was wondering what it was on the floor for.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Then I remembered that I used it with the hand impact driver to break the 6mm slider bolts loose that hold the legs together.  ;)

Saw one of those in the Matco tool catalog yesterday. Salesman said he has never sold one to a motorcycle shop.

Fellas,
That's the Snap on tool I was talking about.  It won't work on our bikes.  You need to apply a vacuum to the top of the fork tube (usually from the back of the bike where you fill the front tubes with air....)  New bikes have sealed front tubes.......you can't get the fluid up in to the leg with that thing....I have one that I used on my '99 Ultra....won't work on our bikes..

Screamin-

Thanks for clearing it up.  Definitely makes sense.  Changing the fork oil is not that hard on ours anyway unless you do it like HD-Dude does it in disassembling the forks.

Disassembling ensures that you get all of the old fluid out (since you can pump each fork) and the correct amount back in.

Boatman,
I would recomend that you dissassemble the front end...........takes better part of a day to do,   but you don't have to do it that often..........get a case of beer,  a good cigar relax and enjoy.... [smiley=drink.gif] [smiley=drink.gif] [smiley=drink.gif] [smiley=drink.gif]

Imagine my dismay, a non mechaical type, that when I asked for the heavy SE oil to be added to my forks at first service.................... I after the painful tryout of bike before second service ............... the bike had 6 oz too much oil in forks.  Make sure your service guys know you have a SE SEEG and not standard. JMHO.  :(

Hey Mrs.,
It's one hell of a lot easier to get out than to get back in!!!!! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I can only imagine the ride though..........kinda like an old girder with tempered legs..........
