Battery Tender for SEUC
« on: November 23, 2006, 12:39:07 PM »

OK, did a search on battery chargers and really didn't find an answer.

I know the batteries go down on the bikes but especially it seems with the SEUC.

My question is, "Does everyone keep a tender on all the time?

I didn't through the summer and almost got caught a couple of times when out of town and the bike sat for a couple weeks.

Now I have it on for the winter so I won't have a let down if the rain ever stops.

Rjob749,

I keep the battery tender on at all times while at home, because my understanding is this will greatly extend the life of the battery.  I have not done so to keep the battery from going low or dead.  I have had the bike away from home for several weeks at a time (without being able to ride it or plug in a tender) and have not had a problem with the battery going low...

During the winter, whether I ride the bike alot or not, I keep the battery tender plugged in.  Just to keep the battery "topped-off".   I never had a problem with my old '02 Ultra in the spring/summer/fall months, leaving the tender off, even if I was gone for 2-3 weeks and bike didn't get ridden.  The battery in the '02 was the original battery when I traded it in on my new CVO Ultra.  So, one of the first things I had them put on, was the battery tender cable.  Even with it being a new bike, it's sitting in the garage plugged into the tender.   I never had a battery last me 5 years before, so keeping it plugged in during the winter months, I must have done something right.  ;)  Hope this helps.

I got the Kuryakin Dually and keep 2 of my 3 bikes plugged in all the time. With the smaller FX batteries, I get 3-4 years out of them that way. Before the Tender, every 2 years like clockwork. I don't use it on the RK since I've been getting 3 years out of them without it, even with winters in NY. I ride year round so it's not like it's sitting all winter.

You want battery hell. I also have a '90 Miata. I haven't been able to keep a battery in that car. I don't use it much because of the bikes (got it in '89 and have 24k miles on it). But nothing seems to help those gel batteries. Mazda, Interstate, nothing helps if you rarely use it. But the Battery Tender definately prolongs battery life. Hoist!

Thanks guys, as you all are I have become a tender fan.

I didn't/haven't had issues with any of my HD's up to the SEUC, all the crap on it plus the HK radio I suppose.

Hoist, Porsches are notorious for dead batteries when parked for a few weeks.

Use the Battery Tender all the time!!!! Have the quick connect/disconnect hooked to the battery and ran under the seat. All I have to do is plug it up when bike is parked and never worry.

Yep, I have the quickie too.  I set the bike up so I can look out the window from our laundry room to the garage and see the little green light on the tender.  Puts a smile on my face to know it is green and go if I walk out there to climb on [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

As is true in modern cars & trucks, there is a certain amount of normal current draw with the bike shut down.

Yeah, I'm a Battery Tender fan myself. Always use it during the colder months. I don't seem to have much problem not using it in the warmer months. The battery stays strong but maybe I ride too much to let it drop off. The battery tender has really saved me money on the old GTX. Batteries last a lot more than one year like they used to. In fact, I don't know when the last time I replaced it. I had a buddy tell me today that he purchased some sort of unit at Harbor Freight that was rediculously cheap. I asked him if it was as "smart" as the Battery Tender outfit and he said that it was supposed to be. Anybody had any experience with these units ?

Need help from those in the know.  I didn't plug in a Battery Tender after the weather started to turn and after a few weeks the battery died.  Wouldn't even take a charge, so I disconnected it figuring I'd get a new one in the spring.  I assume the batt in the siren is dead as a result.  Am I damaging that battery by not replacing the battery now?
