It does work, but only slightly and no where near what the claims are.  Any time you add more heat sink surface area (larger pan and better internal baffling), then of course the oil will transfer more heat to the pan and surrounding air.  And increasing the amount of oil means the oil in the pan has a little more time sitting in the pan and transferring that heat to the pan and thus the surrounding air before it goes back into the engine.  The problem is, as that article you referenced mentions, that the actual drop in temperature is less than the claims made by the manufacturer.  Lowering the oil temperature by a handful of degrees isn't going to make your bike run noticeably cooler, it isn't going to reduce the heat radiated to the rider and passenger, and it isn't going to improve the life of the oil.  When you figure out the "degrees reduction per dollar spent", and considering even a ten degree reduction doesn't accomplish much of anything, it's obviously not money well spent.  I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, but this is just another case of a company selling nonessential stuff just to make a big profit.  Baker makes and sells some very good products, but they are not immune to the pressures to come out with new stuff to increase revenues just like any other company.  They are definitely not the only company marketing unneeded "upgrades" at exorbitant prices.  The Harley aftermarket, including Harley itself, is loaded with such things.  The trick is in figuring out which "upgrades" really are useful and cost effective.  In my opinion these oil pans don't pass the sniff test.

It seems  everyone that has an opinion is basing it on second hand knowledge.  I was hoping to hear from some one who has installed a larger pan and had a first hand experience.  I agree that there should be some reduction in oil temps but my main concern would be the effect on oil shearing and break down.  All the major car manufacturers have been increasing oil pan volume so they can get that magical 10000 mile oil change interval. This is strictly a question of how many circuits through the engine does a particular oil molecule make before it begins to break down. The volume of crankcase oil has a direct affect on that parameter. The manufacturers that have not increased oil pan volume are the ones having dire results on engine longevity and sludging. Toyota tried that 10 years ago and ended up with big problems and even issued a recall on their V6 engines.  The bigger oil pans have been around for a while but I have not read a report from some one that has actually used one.  They may be fluff or a useless mod (there are many out there) but what has the end user experience been?

I guess you may have missed my post.  By first hand knowledge do you mean someone who purchased one, installed it and gave the information that it did absolutely nothing.  That would be me, I did have the temps documented prior to & after the installation and it just took a few more minutes before the temps were the same.  I did not have an oil breakdown test done for obvious reasons.  If you want more oil go for it, if you want to cool it down you will be disappointed.  As many have mentioned there are numerous ways that have proven to be effective.  Not intended to come across wrong or flaming anyone but sometimes you don't need to put your hand on a hot stove to know the results. Most of the replies were from very knowledgeable people who have had a positive impact on helping people on this site.  I know I wasted my money & I freely admit it.  I would agree with you that the extra capacity may lengthen the mileage in between oil changes but is it worth the cost of the item?  If I could get my money back I would install the Wards Fan to keep it cooler and maybe change my oil more often depending on driving conditions.   I hope I have given you my first hand knowledge in a positive manner.

  You might change your mind.....If and when that oil pan comes off I will be adding a larger pan.
