Kennels around here are plentiful and after checking them out, some are really good and the staff kind, considerate and compassionate. So going out of town is not impossible, just gotta plan ahead. But it does get pricey. When we went to MV last fall, the kennel bill was larger that the entire trip bill for two was.
But then the dogs get older. We have an antique dog (18 years old) that just won't go. She now has to be carried outside four times a day and helped to walk to the spot she chooses to do business. She cannot get up or stand up on her own. The vet says no more kennels stays for her. We don't know anyone well enough to ask them to house/dog sit, so overnight trips for two are out of the question. At some point, we will have to make the decision for her, as the vet says that her heart, kidneys and liver are all excellent, it may be a long time before her body gives up. She is not unhappy, mostly sleeps, still likes to eat and get treats. But............... I never want to have to do this again. We still have a five year old, so will have to at some point, but I don't think I want to get any "new" animals. I think it would be better for us to just have us to worry about.
