Damn Bees
« on: November 25, 2006, 05:29:43 PM »

It is a beautiful day here in the mid-south, 70 degrees & sunny. Went out for a nice 200 mile ride with about 30+ plus people. A few hours ago it had warmed up so nicely, I decided to raise my sheild on my new Nolan and BAM, a frickin bee or something with a hell of a stinger landed right in between my temple and the padding in the helmet. Was going about 70 at the time so I assumed he was squashed, wrong, bugger stung the chit out of me, felt like I'd been shot with a 22 right in the temple, then flew his little arss out so I didn't even get to kill him. Hurt bad for about an hour, now I just got home, took the helmet off and the whole side of my face is all swollen like I'd been hit buy Ali. Itches like hell too. Took a couple of Benadryl and have ice on it but damn thing is starting to throp and it is still swelling.
Any suggestions, besides keep the face shield down? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] [smiley=nixweiss.gif] [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

OK, you asked for it: took it off, I was afraid it might scare some poor child walking past a computer screen.

Have you had someone look to see if the stinger's out? Sucks about the stinging and sucks as bad that you didn't get to kill the little pricker(er). I've used a paste of baking soda w/ water before, seemed to help but a major P I T A to keep on.

Not too sure but anymore and you'll be in for an enema and that's a hell of lot worse than the sting.  [smiley=shocked.gif]

Here you go:

Remove the stinger with all haste, in whatever manner is most convenient. If you see a little black dot in the wound, part of the stinger is still present.
Apply a solution of one part meat tenderizer to 4 parts water. Papain, the enzyme in meat tenderizer, breaks down the protein in bee venom responsible for the pain and itching. Don't leave this on for more than 30 minutes, or it can irritate the skin. If this isn't available, you might try an antiperspirant. Aluminum chlorohydrate reduces the effect of bee venom, but to a lesser extent.
Apply cold. Use ice or cool water for 10 to 30 minutes after the sting. This blunts the body's allergic response.
An antihistamine such as Benadryl, taken by mouth, can give some added relief, and help prevent the reaction from spreading.
A shake lotion such as calamine can be helpful. A paste made of baking soda and water can have a similar effect.
Topical hydrocortisone can also provide some symptomatic relief.
Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for systemic pain relief

:o MJZ, sure hope you are feeling better.  My husband is deathly allergic to bee stings and we carry around the anti-venom (I forget the name) all the time.  If you were starting to swell you really should go see your Dr.  As the years go by and the number of times you get stung your natural ability to absorb that poison gets reduced.  Not only do the stings hurt... and can be lethal. And if you are allergic, every day you delay getting proper treatment the sicker you can get.  My husband delayed 24 hours and the Dr, he and I were pretty worried about the outcome. He was dizzy and in a lot of all body pains.  He got some good drugs and obviously survived, but if you are not feeling better, don't delay getting it looked at by a professional.   [smiley=nervous.gif]

Thanks Candy, I think I must be somewhat allergic. I keep thinking the Benadryl and ice pack will work but it doesn't seem to have had any effect. Doesn't hurt anymore, no dizziness or pain at all but sure looks like hell.
Tried the meat tenderizer / water and the baking soda things but if they helped, I wouldn't want to see what I'd looked like without them.

That can't be any fun.  I think the meat tenderized like the baking soda remedy needs to be applied immediately to have much effect.  Your ride home eliminated that possibility.

I still remember catching a bee the same way but thank goodness mine died on impact.  It hurt enough though that I still have vivid memories of it from 20 years ago.

Hope the swelling goes down soon. Topical hydrocortisone would be all that's left to try and may help reduce the swelling if you haven't tried it.
