Harley Tri Glide
« on: March 30, 2014, 10:09:00 AM »

I am intrigued by the Tri Glides, has anyone ridden one or own one. Wondered how they ride and handle. I also notice there is an abundance of used ones on the market with prices that vary like the weather.

Are people buying them and then finding out they want to go back to two wheels or is there an underlying quality/handling issue?

I haven't tried one myself, and I haven't had any real desire to do so.  See if your local dealer will let you take an extensive test ride.  My main concern would be the totally different handling dynamics and how that might become a big problem in rapid response situations.  It's not that easy to unlearn what you've learned in decades of riding two wheelers.  The other issue for some might be forgetting the rear is wider than the front and banging the wheels or bodywork on stuff when you turn.  Kind of like getting used to driving a one ton pickup with dual rear wheels and big fiberglass fenders, if you know what I mean.

I have not heard of any mechanical issues. Only thing besides the learning curve is the fact that you can't avoid a pothole or other road problem easily since you have a wheel on the right track, center track and of course left track.
I wonder if some get sold off due to the fact that many are bought by older riders who are in the last stages of their riding career and may have given up riding for various reasons such as changing to a sports car or even died?

Never thought about end of riding career causing some of the high sales amounts. Certainly would be a total different riding habit to learn. Had a side car once and although it was fun it was very hard to ride even with electric ride adjust.  I think Jerry is on track. I will see if one of my local dealers has a used one I can rent for a few days and try it out.

A local rider I know purchased one and kept it less than three months. His reason for parting with it was the lack of independent suspension. He went back to two wheels. He did say that he'd try another one if it had independent suspension like the aftermarket units do. ... (why he didn't go aftermarket to start with I don't know)

I rode one at a dealer event for about 20 miles.  It reminded me of riding a 4-wheeler. Always pushing/fighting the handlebars.  But it's something you would probably get used to.

Had 4 wheelers that does not sound good at all.  Will stay on 2 wheels.  If I ever do anything I will trike my CVO with a kit that has independent suspension and kick the front end out with a easy steer kit.

We bought one last year.  2 weeks after buying it, rode to Sturgis and back.  Loved it, had no problems.  There is a learning curve, biggest thing for me was not putting my feet down at stops.  Took a week or so to get over that, and still feel it sometimes.  I will occasionally ride my sons FLHR, but I won't ever go back to 2 wheels.

That would not be good to get on your two wheel and forget to put your feet down

I have a FLHTCUI 04 with the Lehman conversion, I LOVE it, mine sits a little lower to the ground than the Triglide, I also have the Easy steer kit, Independent suspension and Air Ride...I have no problem like said to always pushing and pulling the handlebars, I just sit there and steer it.  I've had 3 previous 2 wheelers, and let me tell ya, I would NEVER go back.  I LOVE my trike.  I've heard the Triglides have some steering issues, that may be the reason people sell them and go with the conversion kits out there. Uh, my feet come no where near the ground, and the Triglides sit higher.

LOL....my Triglide sits at the same height as my Ultra did, so my feet can hit the ground, just like it did then.  No steering problems, once you, as I said, get past the learning curve.  There's no leaning on a trike, it's all in your arms.  At first, you will find yourself leaning into curves, but that goes away.

FWIW, I've not yet forgotten to put my feet down on 2 wheels since getting the Trike (I did once long before the Trike, but that was a 9/11 story).

I think the reason a lot of them are only kept so long is...A lot of them are bought by women, they get them and don't ride them, so there old man sells it, or they decide bikes are not for them cause it messes up there hair, I can only speak for myself, I'm a girl, 5'3" and I got tired of sitting in the back seat looking at the back of DaBigNuttedMans head on his bike.   :nixweiss:   :nervous: and I figured if I'm gonna die on a bike, I will do it to myself and not be at the mercy of someone else's driving abilities  :drink: when they have too many of those... :huepfenjump3:

How about ghost wheels? I heard about these from a friend but have never seen one on the road. Seems like they would be a good alternative to trikes.
