Entering Canada on Scooters
« on: March 31, 2014, 10:15:56 AM »

Just trying to prevent any suprises for an upcomming trip. 4 of us will be entering Canada from Montana on Hwy 93. Are DOT half helmets OK?
My Son will be riding a Scooter that is registered in my name, will that be a problem? Of course I have all the paperwork & proof of insurance. Any other things I should know to prevent having a problem? Any and all information from our northern members would be appreciated. Have been to Canada several times, never on a bike. Thanks

DOT half helmets are fine.  I've been into Canada several times on a bike.  Honestly, the only thing checked was our passports and a few simple questions, just like in a vehicle.  Of course, I also carry my registration and proof of insurance as always, but have never been asked to show it.

Jimmy, if you carry on your trip, you won't be able to carry into Canada.  They frown upon such things up there so plan accordingly.  There are places (or were when I crossed over years ago) at the border where you can store your item if you want to retrieve it when you cross back OR they can ship it home for you.

Also, check your bike insurance.  I had to add the provinces that I planned to enter (BC and Alberta) on my policy.  I also went into Saskatchewan and it was an additional cost for my insurance...don't know why that one province specifically but had to do with accident rate and such at the time.  May be different these days but I'd check anyway, just in case.

Ha, ya that was fun. 3 hours interrogation in Canada and 3 more after being escorted back to the US with a swat team readied to take me away. Some wanted career criminal had absconded my SS# for ID. Pretty rare though.
Also, Canada won't let you in if you've had a DUI in the past 5 years and some provedences will take your radar detector if you have one. Or so I've heard

yes any DOT helmet is ok, proof of insurance and registration required if you get pulled over. No firearms. I have never heard of additional insurance for different provinces, must be your own provider who requires it. Usually passports only are needed to enter.

You should be fine with any DOT helmet.  Just be polite, remove your sunglasses, and follow directions.

Be aware that if you've been arrested in the past you may have issues.  I know a guy that was refused entry over a 20 year old DWI.

A few things:

Insurance, in some Provinces you have to have a $1,000,000 of Third Party Liability Coverage, not like some States were the only require the minimum. That is probably the only reason for the insurance.

Weapons;

Including "spring assisted knives" Switchblades are a NO NO, same as us entering the US, Knives must not exceed 9", blade and handle, however check as this may have changed.

GUNS

As some one mentioned earlier, NO WAY will you be allowed to carry/transport a handgun into Canada, no matter what Permits/Licences you have allowing you to do so in the US, concealed or open carry. Even Law Enforcement Types/Military/Secret Service may not be allowed to carry in Canada, Secret Service only if they are on Presidential  Security Detail, Military only on Armed Forces Bases when working with Canadian Armed Forces personnel.

Of course if you come North to hunt you can bring in "Long Guns" rifles, shotguns with proper permitting in locked cases and thne you have to bring back with you to the US.

Prior arrests/conviction for DUI, Drug Possession and other what the Border Guards may consider serious offences, you can apply for paperwork prior to entry by going on the CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency) website and filling out the proper paperwork to be allowed into the country, there is usually a fee for this, however, I do not know what it is. It is no different than a Canadian with a criminal record attempting to get into the US.

The above is not only for US Visitors, it is for all visitors.
