Driving Lamps
« on: April 16, 2014, 12:20:56 PM »

Hey Guys,  thinking about installing some driving lamps on my FLHTCUSE4.  I have looked at the Motolights and Custom Dynamics have some great looking lamps as well,  and a lot less expensive.  I know that these lamps would definitely make you more noticeable and of course we all want to be as SAFE as we can be,  but when I stop and think back on all the bikes that I have observed at Motorcycle rallies and etc,  you just don't see many bikes with these lights on the calipers or engine guards.  Do they take away from the look of the HD or what say you.  If anyone could post some pic's of your bike with these lamps I sure would like to see them.

Thanks
Jimmy

You already have spot lamps as well as a 7" headlight, and if you aim them properly and keep the spots on all the time you will have plenty of visibility from the front.  Adding those caliper mounted tiny lights IMHO will mostly just add to the obnoxious factor, as those bouncing lights irritate the crap out of oncoming traffic.  I ride bikes and they pizz me off, so I can imagine how the non-biker public must view them.

If your bike isn't already equipped to allow you to keep the spots on with the high beam headlight, invest in the simple little harness Harley sells to add that capability.

I agree with Jerry.  Harley programed my spot lights to remain on when the bright light is on.  Reportedly, he hooked up the computer and did this, no wire, no plugs.  I'm vey happy with my lighting and don't want more clutter of lights on my bike.  The daymaker lights are awesome!

Keep in mind also there are many states that do not allow more than 4 forward facing white lights at a time. You may consider changing out your turn signal bulbs for something from custom dynamics. They have an amber colored LED turn signal that will have a healthy glow with the running lights and also function as your TS. Amber colored bulbs are easier to see in the distance than a white light especially during the daylight hours.

Ever pay attention to other bikes both behind you and oncoming.  Many lights appear dim.  Those dim lights appear dim because they are pointing at the ground looking for frogs.  For safety, to be seen, be sure your headlight is adjusted properly, and run your light on high beam during the day.  I want to be seen!

When you run your high beam, there should be no oncoming traffic, and obviously you want to see all you can.  I could never understand why when you flip your high beam on to see all you can, the spot lights auto shut off.  When I asked Harley, they did say many states won't allow all the lights (3) on the same time??  Regardless, at my request, they hooked up their computer and now my spot lights stay on all the time, a noticeable difference! I never thought about the turn signals, being amber more visible than white during the day, but I think your right.

Ever notice a Vette or even some of the Toyotas coming at you down the road with the Amber DRLs? Very noticeable. On all 3 of my trucks the DRLs have been switched to amber lights. Easier to been seen (along with it being a thing of the Avalanche club). I changed the spot lights on my '02 Ultra to amber for the visibility factor when I had it.

I just ordered the Custom dynamics cool magic billet bullets a few days ago with the caliper mounts. When I get  them installed I will post a review with pics on here.

Thanks Guys for all the input.  So to get the existing driving lamps to burn with High Beam is just a fix that the HD shop can do by hooking the bike up to their computer to make the change.  If so,   I think that's what I am gonna do.

Well I dunno but I thought that was for the 2014 model, on my 2013 I bought an HD harness that plugged in behind the headlight.

You are correct.  The 2014 bikes already have that capability.  just a config change.  All others have to purchase the Auxiliary Lamp wire Harness Kit-69200441.  $29.95.

Thanks Again

I use these on my spots. http://www.ceebaileys.com/harley/harleyhdg.html   I run the amber lenses during the day and you just pop them off for night time running.  ;D
