Hayden chain tensioner
« on: April 26, 2014, 12:39:26 AM »

Today I spent 20 minutes at the Hayden booth at Laughlin speaking with Tony.  My #1 question was "why would I need a Hayden tensioner"?  Boy, did he answer my question.

It turns out that the tensioner design adopted by Harley works just fine except that it incorporates a ratchet mechanism that never releases any tension.  What this means is that when the primary components are hot and expanded and the chain is slack, the Harley tensioner adjusts to take up that slack and then when the components cool and contract the tensioner does not relax.  This means that the chain is over-tensioned forever, causing increased loading on bearings and contributing to early failure.

The Hayden tensioner is powered by two springs that adjust themselves to the chain tension at the moment without regard to any previous tension.  This means that, within the operating range of the springs, the Hayden tensioner provides constant and repeatable tension regardless of heat expansion or contraction.

I was sold and bought a tensioner for my 1-month old CVO Limited.

After I get home from Laughlin and install the tensioner I'll provide a follow-up report.

The guys at the Hayden booth are able to answer technical questions without equivocating, have confidence in their product, and are friendly and personable.  This sells me every time.

If you are interested in preventative measures for your CVO then take a look at the Hayden website and email or call them with questions.  I think you'll be as impressed as I was.

GOOD DECISION! The Hayden is great. Many of us on here run it. Much better than the ratcheting H-D tensioner that, as you explained, will often ratchet up too much and over-tighten the chain, then never let go.

I've never understood why the MoCo come up with the POS ratcheting tensioner. They probably shaved off a bit of cost on primary covers by eliminating the removable inspection cover that allowed access to the old, fixed-position tensioner... But they created a whole new set of problems for owners relating to too-tight primary chains.

Hayden solved the problem a long time ago, the right way. With the Hayden, the primary chain tension is always correct. I had one on my old '95 Evo FLHTP too... it made the primary much quieter, and I never had to go in to adjust the fixed tensioner that was used back then.

Please, is the M6-BT07 mountable on CUSE3  '08 ?

On one Ebay shop, I found this information : This part is not compatible with 2008 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic Screamin Eagle FLHTCUSE.

The shop : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hayden-Enterprises-M6-BT07-M6-Chain-Tensioner-/231148795363?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35d18ab5e3&vxp=mtr

Thanks

I seen the same info for my 09 CVO ROAD GLIDE.  I called Hayden and asked about it, it does fit. I bought one but haven't installed it yet. Sounds like everyone is happy with them

It fits ALL 2007 and later Big Twin engines, regardless of specific model.  That website search tool is incorrect.

I'm seriously considering one of these, as well as the Clutch Wiz, Evo spring, and Energy One +1 clutch.  Anyone put any serious miles on this combination?

I'm pretty sure North Georgia Frog is running that set up. Not sure if it's the EO +1 but I know he has all the other goodies and a +1 clutch. Just not sure of the brand.

I have about 10,000 miles on that exact setup, Train. Runs great, no slipping, easy shifting. I use the AIM 480 lb spring though, that I ordered from AIM. I don't know if Evo makes the AIM spring or not.

Frog? That was LAST year, Mike. This year it's been normal rainfall... so far. But come July I may be bitching about NO rain and 106 degrees though... like 2012 was!

Thanks, that's good to know.  I don't believe I have a slip issue yet, but I've only got a thousand or so miles on the build.  I'm more concerned with lever effort.
