Today I spent 20 minutes at the Hayden booth at Laughlin speaking with Tony. My #1 question was "why would I need a Hayden tensioner"? Boy, did he answer my question.
It turns out that the tensioner design adopted by Harley works just fine except that it incorporates a ratchet mechanism that never releases any tension. What this means is that when the primary components are hot and expanded and the chain is slack, the Harley tensioner adjusts to take up that slack and then when the components cool and contract the tensioner does not relax. This means that the chain is over-tensioned forever, causing increased loading on bearings and contributing to early failure.
The Hayden tensioner is powered by two springs that adjust themselves to the chain tension at the moment without regard to any previous tension. This means that, within the operating range of the springs, the Hayden tensioner provides constant and repeatable tension regardless of heat expansion or contraction.
I was sold and bought a tensioner for my 1-month old CVO Limited.
After I get home from Laughlin and install the tensioner I'll provide a follow-up report.
The guys at the Hayden booth are able to answer technical questions without equivocating, have confidence in their product, and are friendly and personable. This sells me every time.
If you are interested in preventative measures for your CVO then take a look at the Hayden website and email or call them with questions. I think you'll be as impressed as I was.
