Heated Grips Are Obsolete - 2006
« on: December 01, 2006, 09:47:42 AM »

Ok, so my bike is not coughing anymore but the heated grips are out. They keep blowing the 5 amp fuse. HD customer service as well as my dealer says HD has discontinued the grips. They are no longer made. Can you imagine 2006 grips being obsolete. HD has stated they are working on a new one but they have been on back order for a year. So, will I ever get replacements. Because the Screaming Eagle is wired through the handlebars, no other grip will work including the 2007.

That was the big question when they put heated grips on the bike,  the p&a book states not to be used with internal wiring.

So am I lucky that my heated grips have are working properly or am I awaiting a blown fuse?

I guess those of us who have them better enjoy them while they last!! I'm sure MOCO will come out with something twice as expensive and not covered under warranty for replacement! :'( :'(

The back order for a year part bothers me.  I had mine replaced over the summer, dealer got the new grips in about a week.  Was just looking at a dealership the other day and they had 3 sets just like the ones that came on the SE hangin on the wall.

I don't know if this will help you, but print this file and take it to your dealer and ask them WHY is there a HOLD UP!

Ok everyone here is what I have to do since the grips on are backorder. When they go out it is because they blow the 5 amp fuse.

I put a new fuse in. Start the bike with the grips and everything electrical off. Once the bike is running, I turn on the grips. I can then turn on the heated seat, radio, etc..Any other sequence blows the fuse. When I am ready to shut the bike off, the first I have to do is turn the grips off. Then I can turn everything else off. Any other way of turning these grips on blows the fuse. If I am careful in following this sequence I can nurse the grips until the replacements are finally manufactured and delivered.

This is a real mess and very disappointing.  :P

Short in the wiring (inside) the handle bar-either the heated grip switch (or Handgrip itself) is touching or a wire is scraped or piched.

Agreed. Mine function fine except they don't heat nearly as well as they did when they were new. I'll get them replaced when I have the scoot in for other work.

With all the problems people are talking about with HD heated grips, I followed other's advise from this site. Wifey just ordered me the Gerbing G-3's with portable dual temp controller w/ leather cover, coiled extention wire, and an extra harness for a second bike, for the Holidays. We got them from a BMW dealer in MD (I think the name was Bob's BMW). The only place we found offering them under list price. Now I won't have to worry about rewiring my new SERK to have toasty hands this winter. Hoist!

I thought that the mine were working good but now I remember that the last time that I used them (Maggie Valley last October) I noticed that sometimes they were not heating enough....or too much cold? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Now I remember talking about that before I headed out of town recently.  Here's the picture of the plug I promised.  It's from a company called Powerlet.  Just a fixed mounted plug rather than something like the battery tender plug hanging loose and strapped off to something.

Since the harness to your heated gloves, jacket liner, athletic protector or whatever else you might be using should be an unswitched source this plug can serve multiple duties for battery tender, your heated gear, an unswitched source for a cell phone or other device, etc etc etc.  There's a bolt hole through the frame in that hole in front of the battery that this is mounted to.  It's the BMW type plug.  Adaptors to go from the other types of plugs to the BMW plug are common and inexpensive.

Twolane, nice diamond cut heads, and thanks for the pics and source of your plug, but I have to be honest here.....the FIRST thing I noticed was the fingerprints all over your chrome.....unacceptable.  ;D
