Okay technogeeks- we're looking to upgrade to a plasma/lcd tv.  Something in the 42-50" range.  Any opinions/advice?

Was just reading an article on Yahoo! Finance the other day that manfacturers investment in plasma technology is decreasing and efforts are being turned toward LCD.  A few years ago, you used to have to choose the plasma to get the screen size you're looking for, but now LCDs in the larger sizes are becoming increasingly available.  Supposedly, the new LCD's refresh rate, resolution and image quality are overtaking the plasma now and all the development dollars being directed toward LCD will only speed that up.

I have a 32" Hitachi plasma and it is awesome, but I'd probably lean toward an LCD if I was buying today.

I would give a good look at the Sony SXRD line of TV's.  I have the 60" and couldn't be happier.  Supposedly, SXRD is the top of the line technology in HDTV land...

Here is a link to Sony's website for their 50" version:

Here is a good discussion forum to check out for all kinds of info on television and electronic goodies:

I've got the 61" Samsung DLP and I'm astounded every time I watch a H Def. show. Had the "engine" go out and it was warrantied no problem. Color is amazing and seeing the smallest of detail is just unbelievable. The biggest problem is that I'vel got spoiled. After watching this set nothing else even comes close. My son got a 50" Hitachi at the same time and it's a wonderful unit but again, wow --  I really dig my unit.

Thanks for the plug Scot, but here I would say I was a Market Maven and am no longer current.  I have had a plasma for over 4 years, and a second one for over 3 years.  Back when the big boxes carried only rear projection and maybe one plasma, I went with the Panny 50" Commercial Model...no speakers, no tuner, just a display, usually bought by schools hospitals and businesses back then.  They were models 50PHD5UY and 6UY.  That worked for me as I had Cable boxes for the tuners and a 7.1 Marantz/Atlantic Technology sound system.

The Panny's have been great, but I did have one problem covered under warranty...it kept going into "sleep" mode...this happened when one year old.

One really nice thing about the Plasma is the field of view...160

I found this site when shopping for a panel about 3 yrs ago. They are a great source of information and do a lot of comparisons between a lot of the units.

   http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com

For us, we bought the Panasonic 42" Commercial model, (No speakers etc) and have been very happy with it.  [smiley=orange.gif] In 2003, the HD model was to much money, so we opted for the 'cheap' $3K 42" SDTV.

Good luck.

I just went with this system:

Sony TV FWD-50PX1 50" Plasma 16x9 aspect ratio HDTV Monitor
Wall Bracket for Sony 50" Plasma TV
Philips TSU7000 Color LCD Touch screen Universal Remote
Sony Receiver STRDA3100ES 120watt x7 Surround Sound, Digital Drive
Sherbourn Amplifier 2channel (this amp is to power zone 2 Spks and vc's)
Sony DVD Player DVPCX985 400Disc Progressive, SACD, CD, DVD Player
Use existing CD player and Cable Box
Polk Audio Center Spk RMSeries Dual woofer Single tweeter
Polk Audio Inwall Spk RC65i Single 6"woofer, Single 1"tweeter
Speakercraft IR Repeating System Eye, Brain and Emitters (Plasma Proof)
Newpoint Surge Protector 8plugs
Elan Volume Control VSW Impedance Matching (new vc's for the spare rooms)

I have the same Sony in a 42" in my boat, best features for me is the viewing angle and the picture clarity under differing light conditions.
If you have the room for it, Sony makes a rear projection WEGA HD that is 16" deep, I have the 50" model and love it. It is very close to the quality of the plazma and only about $1,500.

Thanks for the replies, everybody.  It definitely gives me something to work with.  I've got a Nakamichi system with B&W 801 Matrix speakers, that works exceptionally well.  No, it's not surround, but I've never been a big fan of sound from behind me.  The 801's have great projection, so when they're properly placed, you have a hard time telling where they are because the sound seems to come from everyplace.  I've looked at the rear projection sets, but never found one that remotely compared to the plasma/lcd sets.  I'll have to look at the Sony.
That's interesting to hear about the technology expenses, Brian.  It certainly makes sense.  From what I've read, it seems that the lcd screen should last longer, but the replacement of the light source is debateable.  Anybody have any experience with that?
