Jagg fan assisted oil cooler quick review
« on: June 28, 2014, 07:57:33 AM »

I installed a Jagg 10 row fan assisted oil cooler last week, and have been really impressed.

I live in Southern California, and the summers here can be brutal (yes, I can see you Arizona boys rolling your eyes right now!), and I've been really concerned about the high oil temps I've seen - 270 to 300 degrees, even when moving well.  New exhaust , cams, and TTS helped, but oil temps were still way too high.

I removed the lowers earlier, so the install was simple, and it looks fine.  Jagg doesn't make a chrome version, so I was afraid the bigger black cooler would be an eyesore.  It's not too bad, hardly noticeable, in fact.

I rode up in the mountains to begin with, where it was in the 80s.  The oil temp never went above 230.  So far, so good.  The next day I rode out to Palm Springs, where the air temp was 105 to 110.  Rode in stop and go traffic around town, and the highest oil temp I saw that day was 241.  I was really pleased with that.  If my oil temps stay in that range over the long term, I'll be a happy camper.

So far, this looks like a product that actually does what it says.

Install was easy, even for a chimp like me!

I'm glad to hear that works good for you. Install one on my S&S 124", didn't make any difference.

Skipper,

I read elsewhere you are getting 330 degree temps.  Is that your head temp or oil temp?  Seems to be too high for oil...

Frankly, I'm pretty sure the Jagg cooler by itself is a big upgrade over the stock oil cooler.  My temps are lower even on the freeways, where the fan assist shouldn't have much effect.  The biggest improvement is in stop and go traffic, though.

Also, this cooler was added in addition to Fullcsac pipe, TTS Mastertune, and Wards Partworks fan.  These motors are hot, period.

Hey Dan, do you have the part number for the kit? Thinking of doing the same. Not sure if I can recycle the oil cooler and put it on my Softail custom but it might be worth a shot.

Wayne, the PN is 751-FP2400.  I got mine at directcycleparts.com, which is physically located near my home.  I think I paid about $420 because I went directly to the showroom and paid with cash.  One of the benefits of living in SoCal.  They will match the lowest price on the net, if that helps.

Good Luck, keep your head down while you're over in Crazy-stan!

Thanks Dan, much appreciated. Looks like the same number I was seeing so thanks for the confirmation. Don't think there is any problems with removing the stock oil cooler to mount this one but let us know if you had any weird install issues.

Thanks for the being safe in Crazy Stan. The election fiasco isn't sitting well with them.

Update:

Rode up to San Jose thru the Central Valley, 3 hours of 100+ degrees, and the highest oil temps never exceeded 240.  Also rode stop-and-go a few times in Palm Springs in 110+ temps, and oil temps never exceeded 241.  I need to see if my thermometer is broken and stops on 241.  :nixweiss:

Disclaimer:

In hot weather, comfort is still an issue.  This is a Stage II modified engine, and I use the Ward's Parts Werks fans, too, so the Jagg fan assisted oil cooler isn't the only cooling device I'm using.  Also, riding thru Palm Springs and waiting in traffic and stop lights are still like getting water boarded with boiling oil.  The extra air from the WPW fans wafts right up into your face and chest when stopped or moving slowly.  It's just part of riding in the summer.

Will this fit on the new twin-cooled engine? The water pump would be in the way to mount it like you did. Not sure how much it air it would catch if I were to mount one above the pump. I noticed mine almost goes right into heat management mode even if you just get off the highway and hit minor stop/go traffic. I looked to see if the rad fans were on and they weren't. How hot do these have to get for the fans to come on?

Phantom,

With the mounting brackets designed the way they are, and the size, there's no way the Jagg or the UltraCool will mount between the down tubes of the frame.  And even if the oil cooler could fit, the depth of the radiator with the fan is going to put it in contact with the front fender or the front cylinder.  It's substantially bigger than the stock cooler.

Jagg and UltraCool will have to totally redesign their oil coolers for the new dual cooled Harleys.  Maybe some enterprising vendor on this forum could come up with a new mounting set up.

I live in SoCal, gets hot here too!
I had Fullsac in AZ send me the stage 1 setup for my bike.
My fans are now programmed to:
L off: 80C (176)
L on: 85C (185)
R off: 90C (194)
R on: 95C (203)
I can't find the OEM settings at this time........must have saved them in some other folder!

I have my ETIMS set "off"
I just got back from a trip where the temps ranged from 45-108 and noticed sometimes the fan(s) would come on at a stop depending on traffic and temps. Never really noticed any heat issues except at traffic stops at 108*
This bike has no oil cooler and ran without issue for this 5000 mile trip.
I would suggest you give Steve G. a shout about any heat issues on the new twin cooled bikes. (He has the new bike and lives in Lake Havasu and, yeah, it gets pretty hot there also)
