Iron Butt Trip
« on: July 14, 2014, 01:24:24 AM »

I left from home (Northwest Missouri) at noon on Friday and rolled into Phoenix, Arizona at 1:00 pm on Saturday.   Stopped for gas and beverage only until I hit Tucumcari, NM where I ate, stretched and relaxed for about an hour.  Then to Winslow, AZ. where I had to get a few pics Standing At The Corner (I'll post those in famous places)

No rain the whole way.  It was a little hot coming across Kansas on Friday afternoon, but it was scorching hot when I dropped into the valley just North of Phoenix.

Google maps said the trip on my route would be 1350 miles but I came upon a very bad car wreck just South of Dalhart, TX. and had to backtrack 150 miles to get around it.  So my trip was somewhere around 1500 miles.

I can safely say that my butt never really hurt the whole trip.  Thank You Corbin!

However, both of my wrists, especially my throttle hand are absolutely killing me.  I rode with my feet on the pegs and heels on the boards most of the trip, right side is fine but my left leg went numb the last few hours.  I don't believe that I'll be doing a trip like that again, just too hard on the bod.

Before I started, I was planning to stay all night in Tucumcari but the detour due to the wreck put me in there at 3:00 am and I wasn't going to spend 120 bucks for a room for three hours.  So, hammer down.

Just one speeding ticket in Guymon, OK (68 in a 45).  Most of the trip cruise speed was around 80.

Sounds like a great(but scary)trip to me. Didn't do it when I could....can't now!! Leaving in 10 days for the Canadian Rockies with 11 days of 350-400 per day, probably going to be in traction after that.

That's crazy. I generally cap my days rides at 600-700 miles.  I prefer 350-450.

Take some time to rest. I always worry about safety after that much saddle time.

Congrats on the ride. i have tried 2 different attempts this yr. 1500mile in 24hrs, 1st one i cancelled due to my buddy having issues and i dont leave anyone behind "847miles for a big mac round trip". second was due to Severe weather.
the improtant thing to remember is if you have been riding for a while and you keep having to tell yourself to keep going it time to stop.

The hour that I relaxed in Tucumcari was definitely a life saver.  After filling the tank, I parked the bike and just flopped down on the concrete.  The people walking by probably thought I was nuts but at that moment I really didn't care.  It took me awhile to stretch out the kinks after getting off the concrete but it did revive me.  That, breakfast and the picture in my mind of 2k's avatar supplied the drive and motivation to continue!

Wow - very impressive.

We made almost the same trip last week - SE Iowa to Phoenix.  However we took two days 725 miles 1st day 780 the next.  As exhausted as I was after each day I doubt I could have made the trip without spending the night somewhere, plus I hate to drive at night.  Glad you missed the rain.  We dodged rain on the way to Iowa (end of June) and got caught in a bad storm just east of Flagstaff on the way back.

If you every find yourself in Guymon for a meal Eddies Steak House has great steaks - reasonable price plus excellent service.

Born and raised in SE Iowa, lived there for over 50 years.  Wife and I have family close to Keokuk as well as a son in Cedar Rapids.  We both retired last May and moved to AZ to get in more riding time.  It's been like one continuous summer ever since.  Only negative is the months of June thru August where temps reach triple digits most of the time.  We timed this return trip to go to J&P's open house.  Been going there for several years.

I live in Fort Dodge about 3 hours from Anamosa and I have never made the JP event. This year I was in the Smokies that weekend. Heard they went to 3 days this year. In the hot months do you just stay neck deep in a swimming pool?

Not to steal the thread, but Jesse, how long have you lived there. I grew up in Ft Dodge, delivered newspapers, worked at Treloar's Resturant, and Hormel summers---20 years. Graduated from FD High. We thought of taking a trip there this summer to visit all the old haunts and see old homes we lived in.
