Garmin Zumo or 2820 ?
« on: December 12, 2006, 04:32:11 PM »

Have read all the threads on both. Have never owned a GPS. Are there advantages or disadvantages to either? Can't decide which would be best. Will probably want to switch between bike and truck.

Thanks

My girlfriend bought me a Garmin 2730 for my birthday in May.

Curt,  From what I've read (I own the 2820, but I'm not prejudiced against Zumo) the 2820 has a more detailed map database installed than Zumo.  That would be something of concern to me.  Also, it cannot hold as many Points of Interest. The Zumo does have a short term battery backup, which is convenient.  And, it has the neat motorcycle Icon on the display showing you going down the road  ;). It also has a fuel gauge, but I'm certain you have to provide the information to the unit so that it can calulate when you're about to run out and help you find the nearest gas station.  I just look at my fuel gauge and odometer, and know when it says 1/8 and 150 miles, I'd better be stopping soon....I've usually got to pee then anyway. If I get real worried, I pull up "nearest gas" and it tells me how far to the closest one, and gives other choices as well.

After reading what I've read, were I purchasing today, I think I would still go with the 2820.  I've been using it for almost 6 months now, and really like it.

I'm not dissing the Zumo at all...I think it boils down to which one you like the looks of best, especially if you've never had one.  Either way, you'll have a good functional piece that you'll enjoy.

There is is a good discussion on the differences between the 2820 and Zumo here: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=73246

I am a long time Garmin Street Pilot user, I just ordered a Zumo.

I was all set to get the Zumo until I read the post on the differences that Terry mentioned. I'm on hold right now until I get a clear calling one way or the other so those that have access to both your opinions are greatly appreciated! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

In the link you posted above someone indicates that on the Zumo you cannot turn off the auto re-calculation and you cannot program distance for a detour.

The Zumo route auto-recalculate is not a problem, it's just different. How it's handled is covered in this thread: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188868&page=3

Zumo uses the same City Navigator v8 map detail as the 2820 so all the same map detail is there.

The POI capacity of both units is the same.

Zumo holds 500 waypoints; 2820, 2000. Anyone having more than 500 waypoints should really consider converting them to a POI file as it is very impractical to try to manage that many waypoints on a Garmin unit.

The Zumo is not perfect, no GPS is, but it offers some nice features for bike riders. Some things I especially like are: it's internal battery allowing you to look at routes, POI's etc. in a restaurant or other location without plugging in to a wall outlet. Unique track log features allowing you to easily create routes from track logs (you can also look at your track logs on Google Earth maps). SiRF chipset for faster start up time and less signal loss. It even picks up a full signal inside my house so there should be less signal loss under tree canopies, canyons and around tall buildings. You can operate it wearing gloves. SD card slot. Screen brightness and clarity is very good.

I wouldn't be too influenced by the detour function, it is something that is not used a lot by most. The Zumo has a detour function but is not as sophisticated as the 2820.

The Zumo package is complete with everything needed to mount it on your bike, with the 2820 you'll be buying mounting parts and exploring various mounting hardware options. With either unit you have to purchase the XM receiver/antenna separately.

Here is a 2820 installation thread that will give you some good installation information: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=57448 Most of the 2820 hardwire, XM antenna and audio connection information applies to the Zumo too. That thread also includes how to set up the Harley Dealer location POI file with either unit. The thread contains other pertinent info as well.

There have been a lot of reports regarding screen fogging on 2820 units.

I expect Garmin to further enhance Zumo's current features with firmware upgrades like they typically do with a lot of their units.

Sounds like they both have their plusses and minuses.  What's the price difference?  Maybe that could be the deciding factor for you?

I have a 2720 and it does everything I need/want it to.  Relative to your desire to be able to switch between bike and truck, I can have it off the bike and in the car or truck, or vice versa, in less than 30 seconds.

With a map, compass and licking a finger and sticking it up in the air (for temp and wind direction), I rarely get lost! Real cheap too!

Wondering if there is anymore feedback on the differences between these two since the Zumo has been out for awhile. Would really be interested in feedback from someone that has used both. TIA.

D00d, ordered the 550 yesterday from www.pcnation.com for $688.00 with free 3 day shipping.

After seeing Unbalanced 550 I had to have one.

www.jmcorp.com will have a bluetooth system for your helmet that will be available in April. Hope they will have a prototype in Daytona to look at.

Brian,
Thanks Bro. :2vrolijk_21: I found another source w/free shipping about the same price ($687.97) www.buydig.com.

After reading this thread I was just wondering what people's thoughts were comparing the two models since the Zumo has been out for awhile now.

I've been wanting a GPS since MV. I even saved the routes that 103 did in case I ever get back to that area I could do the rides I missed.

Any of the Zumo owners out there know whether you can load routes up like the ones 103 did for the MV '06 rides?

I'm really lost when it comes to this GPS stuff and want to make sure I'm getting the most for my $$$$

Gary,

I can give you a comparison to the HD -Garmin Quest;I had the Quest installed on my bike when I picked it up last April.  I used for about 10K miles and was very familiar with the ins and outs, which is similar to the 2820.  They have a lot of data available as has been stated.  I really liked the altitude function, which was interesting to see on my trip to Sturgis.  Also, the HD dealer location was a bonus, but I have since loaded the dealer network into my Zumo thanks to one of our brothers here.  The main reason I decided to change was the Quest kept falling off!  One thing is for sure about the Zumo; it is VERY easy to use and see, even in the bright sunlight!  I had a hard time seeing the smaller screen, plus it was harder to do anything without your gloves off, (Zumo is a touch screen).  The tracks and downloads are the same for both.  I think the Zumo is a very intuitive and easy to learn system.  I have been using my Zumo now since Nov, and absolutely love it.  As for price and ease of doing business; I bought from Comp-U-plus, and their price was the most competitive.  They shipped when they said they would, and everything was great!  Let me know if you have any other questions, and let us know what you decide.

In regards to downloads I've been hearing that the 2820 can hold larger (more) d/l (maps) then the Zumo. I don't have a laptop so need something that I would be able to load all my maps/routes up on before I leave home. I do understand I can get flash/memory cards for additional space, but comparing the two units is there much difference in that feature?

Not having the elevation feature doesn't really bother me I can't see for me personally where that would make a difference.

The ability to see the Zumo better is a plus eyes aren't what they used to be. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for your feedback.

Like you said, you can always add memory.  I haven't found a situation where I ran out of memory for a planned trip.  Even when I travelled to Sturgis on my old Quest, I still had memory left.  Also, as for the detail, I find it has plenty of detail for me.  Like you, my old eyes sure appreciate having a screen that is easy to see.
