Twolanerider,

The HD counter folks give me the reason behind the bolt theory is that when a bolt is Chromed it loses it's factory strength therefore it may create warrenty problems down the road for them. I'm not sure I buy that but it sounded good. With this all being said one would ask, Whats wrong with SS bolts. In my opinion we own the best of the best and as I admire it I cant help but wonder why would they do that. It's like this piece of 2 inch black hose on a chrome Oil Line Vent it doesn't make sense but they must have a reason.

Mac, that position from the counter guy should hold up just about as long it takes him to reach over his shoulder and grab a chrome bolt kit from the peg board on the wall.

I can, however, understand whey they don't use stainless in a production environment.  Installing SS hardware with high speed tools is a recipe for problem.

Having said that, us doing it with it hand tools is not really an issue.  Even less so if you're willing to use a bit of anti-seize during the install.  Check out Alloy Bolts (might be "Boltz").  They even sell on eBay for some decent prices sometimes.  Can get a full set of polished stainless stuff there, to do everything on and around the motor for $80 or so if I remember correctly.

SS costs to much, that would drop the profit margin if installed at factory.

Mac,

The only strength issue I'm aware of with chrome plating bolts is the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement.  If the parts are properly treated after plating (baking at high temp for a specified period of time), the risk of embrittlement is very low.  BTW - this applies to any electroplating process, not just chrome.

Fianally did the MOD, it looks awesome.
The ease of it really makes me wonder about the reason (other than the $50.00) why it wasn't done in the first place.
Thanks for the comments
