Air Cleaner decision
« on: August 11, 2014, 04:00:01 PM »

I'm replacing my Ventilator, and have it down to the following two:

1) S&S single bore tuned induction

http://www.sscycle.com/go-fast-showcase/motorcycle-induction/single-bore-tuned-induction/

2) Boyesen Power X Intake

http://www.boyesen.com/power-x-intake

I would prefer going with the Boyesen, since I like the simple round style AC.

I do like the S&S styling as compared to all the other forward facing cold air type intakes, but I don't know if it's overkill, or if it would provide much more performance vs the Boyesen.

I have a 2009 RG 110, with a mild build (headwork, throttle body porting, .030 head gaskets, stock 255 cam re-degree).

I spoke to Boyesen, and the guy there told me that their AC flows better than a Harley Stage I, but not as much as a Heavy Breather or similar.

Opinions?

Actually, scrap all that- I spoke to my builder and he encouraged me to stick with the Heavy Breather minus the fancy cover- since I don't like the red filter showing, he said it's fine to run the rain sock on it all the time. Or, Wimmer sells different colour filters which I believe fit the HB.

Apparently it's a real good performer and helps with the oil puking- not only hides it from dripping/spraying on the bike, but actually reduces it.

Put the HB on and went for a ride today. Wanted to test it for oil puking, Wound it up to 5 k a few times, but the weather was cool, but no oil at all in the breather chambers.

I know the butt dyno can get fooled, but it seemed like it had more power at WOT.

Hopefully the looks will grow on me and it'll be a keeper.

Also had to change the breather bolts to the nipple style ones.

The boyesen intake will flow more guaranteed! I have used them extensively and my bone stock heads and cylinders 2013 FLTRU 103 is making 110trq @ 95hp with 255 cams, boyesen intake and rb racing lsr spyder pipe. Old dyno, new one isn't loading it is now 115trq.

The boyesen is misunderstood and misused by the majority of tuners it requires MUCH less timing and more fuel than the tuners are used to dealing with. A high quality Denso, NGK or Harley irridium plug 1 step colder gapped .043 helps as well! :bananarock:

If you want to spend BIG $$$ on the s&s for less power go for it! The s&s is nice on a 117 or a 124 on a 96,103,110 it WILL not make as much VELOCITY as the boyesen. My bike now that is broken in is making 115 trq @ 95hp and the torque spread is WIDE.
The key to the boyesen is that neat reverse tulip in the air cleaner working in conjunction with the x wing... You have smooth long air transitions that speed up the intake charge through the Throttle Body! :cucumber:

The boyesen properly tuned will accelerate in 3rd gear SMOOTHLY from 1650 rpm, Loaded 2 up it will accelerate smoothly from 1800 rpm!

BTW It also accelerates all the way to 6200 rpm with NO FALL OFF!

Try the boyesen, use it properly with a high scavenging pipe and ENJOY ;D

I'm thinking this is the route I will go as well. Did you have to retune when you changed the filter? Or, do they both flow similar as they are both open by design?

The air cleaner has nothing to do with crankcase pressure! Crankcase pressure is what pushes the oil out the breathers, the heavy breather air filter or any other air filter isn't going to change it. It may hide it better and not drip it back out on the bike but rest assured it doesn't change it any.
