I believe the concept of CVO's retaining value used mostly relates to blue book value. No matter how much cash you dumped on mods banks will only lend close to what the blue book value indicates it's worth. Dealers will use this to beat your trade down; a private sale differs of course. In the case of a CVO, supposedly they are factory equipped with lots of extras (recognizing many of us would have issues with what the MoCo utilizes for equipment), which would be indicated by blue book making it worth more compared to a standard model. There are many who couldn't or wouldn't pay what CVO's are selling for whether new or used.

If they were Canadian and they where Deadbeats you would not have had any interest in maybe an overpriced CVO. And probably they were the only ones willing to look at buying your bike who had the money.

geezerglide

Agreed with by one of the Canadian deadbeats !!!! I hope you have it a long time.  :P

Not sure if you are aware Rooster but SCRM-R sold me back the Croc/Ostrich/Scottish Leather Alligator Bob bag and seat set that truly made Elvis, Elvis. I am visiting Twolane on my way home from Maine next week and he has a piece I need to begin Elvis II. I also posted on the buying thread that I'm looking for a set of H-D 80 spoke wire wheels. Once I get the bags and seat, handlebars and wire wheels on, the rest of the transformation is small things  - - like every single piece of hardware being chrome 12 point and a bunch of other stuff. I am excited as a kid the night before Christmas. My wife and I sold our home in Poway and moved 5 miles to Scripps. We went from a huge 5 bedroom house to a two bedroom condo with a tiny single garage; but there's enough room for a motorcycle and a lift. I pick up the future Elvis II the weekend before Thanksgiving and besides being thankful for my health I will be saying a big Thanks for completing this deal on this incredible example of an 03 SERK.

B B
So good to hear Elvis 11 will be putting a huge smile on your face. Nice to hear about the AB bags.

Last Saturday we rode to Space Coast Harley in Palm Bay FL for their open house. They had the new 2015 Road Glide CVO in red. A new salesman sees me and ask what I ride. Telling him I have a 2011 Road Glide CVO he says we'd love to have it.

I asked him, even with 42K miles on the clock?  He assured me yes.
After their appraiser looked at my stage lll bike with $45K in it, he tells me it's worth $15K. LOL
He then deducted another $3K for mileage and another $750 to replace my front wheel due to some corrosion. So now my CVO is worth $11,250!

Then he prices their CVO at $3K over MSRP, for a total of $30K difference OTD!

Now why would I pay $3K over MSRP after being told how quickly my CVO depreciated?
I thanked for his time and said no.
Then he tells me the updated used mc book will be out next month and my bike will further depreciate.
Hey you told me my bike is only worth $11K to you, how much more can it go down as I laughed out loud.  Even if my bike got stolen or burnt to the ground my insurance would pay more than $20K.

I'll continue to ride my mc even if it depriciates down to zero. The arrogance.

The truly sad part is that these places pull that crap because they are successful at it often enough to make it worthwhile (to them).  In other words, there are enough idiots out there who accept this kind of treatment to justify these business practices to the dealers.  Places like this one have definitely taken the "buy low and sell high" advice offered to investors to heart.  I'm just disheartened by how many people let them get away with it.  I'm reminded of another common expression that goes "a fool and his money are soon parted".

Wow!  This is crazy!  I'd never step foot in that dealership again!  My worse offer for my previously owned regular (non CVO) 2011 RG Ultra with 64K miles was more than that just 5 months ago.  How can Space Coast survive screwing people like that?  I found that the dealers in my state (Indiana) don't mark up CVOs above MSRP.  The dealer I ended up trading with was willing to give me $5K over wholesale book for my old bike, but it took a year and visits to several dealerships around the mid-west to find that deal.

Apparently they have an over abundance of payment $uckers, that only care about how much a month more they will have to pay. Not caring that the loan will be extended for several more yrs.

Unless it's a zero interest loan, I'm a cash buyer. I've lost any hope in ever buying a mc from this dealership. I would buy a used CVO on eBay sight unseen before doing business with Space Coast HD.
This just makes me appreciate my current CVO that much more. If this continues at other dealerships, then I'll never again buy a new mc from them. I'll do business with a private seller instead.

Who says CVOs are depreciating??

There is a O/B '09 SERG, 22k miles, on the floor at (the new) Emerald Coast HD in Ft Walton Beach. I asked the new GM (who happened to be on the floor) what they were asking for the '09 and he promptly said $32k, I made comment that was what they were new, and he immediately piped up "No, they were $39k new." I told him my yellow '09 that I just dropped off for service was $32k, but that I hope you get it ($32k)... Then he goes on that they can no longer give discounts (on parts) because that effects their (new bike) allocations...

Another sign of the quality of HD dealers. It would be easy enough to have looked that up. It also would have ment HD did not raise their prices for 6 years.  Do they charge over MSRP?

He should have just said that it was the most awesome SERG model year ever and they are considered classic collectables...

LOL. You know that is hype. Same thing they told me when I bought my 2011. Told me it's the last year they are going to make it. Well, how long did that last? Now the resale on it has hit the bottom. I only have about 3000 miles due to operations and recovery. I'll keep it till it rots before I will give it away. Just my two cents.

Should have asked why they're charging 3k over MSRP if the CVOs depreciate so fast...based on that statement, the dealer would want get rid of the CVOs ASAP before they depriciate while sitting in his showroom. Don't you despise talking with these "experts."

I was at Rommel HD a few weeks back - the one in DE that used to be Mike's Famous.  They had a 2010 SEUC5, Hot Citrus and Burnt Amber like mine, for $19,999.00.  It had relatively high miles, don't remember the exact number, but well below the 92K that mine is showing.  Hell, for that price, I should buy it for a spare and part out the stuff I don't need.

I am buying my 3rd 2003 SERK from a site member. He's had the motorcycle since delivery from the factory and I know the history of it from A-Z. I am also buying a bunch of spares from him as I hope to hang onto this one and pass it along to a grandchild some day. Anyway, the reason I am posting here is that the seller and I first touched on this sale three years ago. The price we negotiated then still stands and we both feel comfrotable with it. What does that say ? In my opinion it says that for this bike at least the price has reached a point of stabilization. It's not going down any more and may actually be ticking up just a bit. The average on the INET that we could find was close enough that we agreed to stick with our orginal talks but it is ticking up slowly. And I think that's really what you have to look at in this entire discussion. None of the CVO bikes are 25 years old yet. I think basically until these bikes get some more years behind them that this discussion is moot. What was a 71 Dodge Challenger convertible with a Hemi or a Plymouth Barracuda rag top worth in 1974 ? Squat. Can I see a show of hands of those who would like to have an OEM 71 Challenger  or 71 Cuda in their garage right now ?

I seriously doubt that any mass produced Harley becomes collectable, at least within our lifetime. IMHO, the best reason for owning a CVO or any Harley is simply because you want it and enjoy riding. Truly, the CVO's are a value when you consider all the features. You cannot come close building your own. That is the value.
