:o Damn...  Was it corroded like that all the way up to the exhaust port?

It looks like moisture was being trapped under the wrap somehow at that location and eventually corroded through.

I replaced these about 6-8 weeks ago with V&H True Duals.

Every wrapped pipe that I have seen that has been on for any length of time, has looked just like that. No matter who manufactured it.

Exactly... Wrapping the (any) pipe will cause that type of corrosion. It is documented many times on the site when people mention wrapping the pipes that this is a possibility.

I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S FULLSAC FAULT, THAT IT HAPPENED!!!!

Like mentioned before, wrapping ANY header or pipe will have the same results!

Many have had Fullsac headers on this site, me included, and longer that don't look like that. The wrap will kill it. Sorry to see it happen to you.

It's hard to believe that after as much as has been posted on this site about wrapping a pipe you would blame Fullsac for this issue.
Maybe you missed those post about the subject or felt they didn't apply to you but wrapping any pipes are a recipe for rust and corrosion.
Wrap those V&H and you will see.

I think if you need to do that to your pipe it's obvious that the bike is very hot.  I'd have my tune checked before I would wrap the pipe. Adding some gas should cool that down I would hope.    Stuart.

Chip,

I am not assigning any blame. I am simply letting others know not to let the technicians wrap their pipes, including Fullsac pipes. When I had the headers replaced on my '11 with the Fullsac X-pipe, it was still throwing off a ton of heat. I asked the technicians what could be done. They suggested and performed the wrap. I had not read anything about the horrors of wrapping in the forums. My bad for not investigating before trying to get rid of the heat through wrapping. This is not a warning against a specific product, it is an example of what wrapping did to the product I decided to purchase. And I did share these pics with Steve and he is the one who explained that the damage was caused by moisture trapped in the wrap.

Well glad we got that straight.
I will assign blame, the bolded part above!
Back in 08 (wow, 6 years ago) the D&D I put on the SEUC was damn hot. I asked the guys at HD of Charlotte about wrapping the rear header to control the heat. Absolutely not was the response and for the same reasons you have experienced on your 11.
Thanks for your response, it just appeared you were blaming Fullsac and we all know that's not the case.

At least you wrapped yours to try to eliminate a heat problem.  What do you suppose all those folks who copy the trendy crap they see in the bike rags think when they have their wrapped pipes disintegrate?   And they all do eventually.

The best approach IMHO would be for companies to bring back the true double wall exhaust pipes that were pretty much standard back in my youth.  Not only did they reduce the amount of heat transferred to you, they kept the pipes looking good without having to resort to the tacky heat shields held on by hose clamps.

I was just wondering if a pipe formed from good stainless would suffer the same fate.  Probably, but only after a much longer period of time would be my guess.

Any of the currently made SS pipes on the market will suffer the same. Most are made of low grade SS and a magnet will even stick to them to some degree. Good SS will not let a magnet stick at all. If and this is a "big if" you want to wrap a pipe you can only cover 2/3 rds the diameter of the pipe to allow it to breath. The mositure will still get at the pipe but at a much slow rate. This is known as a shield rather than a wrap.

If your pipes areceramic or other hi temp coated it will make them last MUCH longer under wrap. I have ALWAYS wrapped my Doug Thorley's on my chevys and when ceramic coated then wrapped they last 6-9 years and 120k-150k. I do it PURELY for the lower underhood temps.

There is a bike locally with a wrapped ceramic coated thunderheader that is still solid after almost 4 years but definitely getting brittle.

Wrap is a last resort to keep off heat. It will definitely eat up ANY pipe under it EVENTUALLY!
