First Impressions of Orange Crush
« on: September 09, 2014, 01:28:02 PM »

I picked up a new 14 Road King in Orange Saturday and with all the rain this weekend only got to put about 16 miles on it. Yesterday I got to ride a little more, 61 miles, and here are my initial thoughts about the bike.

This is the first 110 that I have owned having ridden a modded 103 since late 2003. I noticed that the 110 has much more torque up to about 3000 rpm, my 103 with high duration cams is kind of a dog below 3000. I really liked the added torque down low.

The windshield is fine for me at 6' up to around 90. Beyond that the wind hits me in the top of the helmet, so a new windshield is going to be a requirement. Probably go with an 18 inch Freedom using a stock RK frame.

The stock seat was fine given the limited amount of time I spent on it.

Really like the new bag latches. Sure beats the old ones.

The Reflex Brakes take some getting used to. I am not used to the front end reacting when only applying the rear brakes. Its like I'm surprised a bit when I hit the rear brake. Really don't notice when I apply the front brake because you are expecting the slight dive.

Aint missed the Radio (yet).

Like the new switches and being able to toggle though the display going down the road without having to move a hand.

Like not having a key switch.

Love the Breather It's Sexy!

Love the Paint overall!

Love the Wheels!

Shrader

I concur, Shrader!

I upgraded from a stock TC88 and this SERK is a beast in comparison.
The ride is great (compared to the Wide Glide).

All your points are spot-on, but I'm less convinced with the seat & shield, though.

I've gone a couple of 2+ hour non-stop rides...I'm not convinced the seat's gonna cut it...
...really starts to "pinch the tush" after a while. Might be I'm too damn big (let's call it 17 stone)
for the skinny little stock saddle.

And, the windshield would be much more effective if it were taller (or I was shorter than 6'4")!

But overall, it's a a real great scooter - I'm definitely pleased with my new ride, too!

Ride safe!

Hey Bubba

Compared to me you are a lightweight. I'm more like 20 stone. LOLOL

Gonna ride some more tomorrow evening, weather permitting, should decide whether the seat will be tolerable for me as time goes on. Changed the seat on the SEEG to a mustang and really like it, may have to do the same on this one.

I also noticed that the RK has a zone that really shakes the windshield around 2000 rpm either accelerating or decelerating, is yours like this?

I agree with everything you said. Bought one in May this year. Only have 700 miles on it but I really like it.

Yeah, Shrader. There's a windshield shake at low RPMs, but I guess I haven't paid attention to the tach with regards to where in the band. I've found it goes with a simple twist of the wrist!

I was looking at a demo HD hammock seat yesterday.
Anyone have input on the hammocks?

But I'd really like to retain a 2-piece seat
I prefer the appearance - and the ability to remove the passenger seat and have the solo look when I wish.

Ride safe!

Update after 1000 miles to, in, and from the Valley.

The stock seat sucks bad, Particularly after about an hour in the saddle. Gonna have to come up with another Mustang or something to replace this pitiful excuse for a saddle.

Getting used to the linked brakes, this SOB will stop on a dime.

Riding the SEEG for 11 years I got used to people at gas stations, etc commenting on how beautiful that black blue paint is, it has happened at least once every time I have been out on it. If the reaction from people along the way to MV is any indication, this combination of colors grabs even more attention, every time I stopped someone commented about color combination on the bike. One guy even asked what color it was, said he would like to have a truck painted that color.

Shrader

Rolled mine over 1,000 miles today, too - with about the last 400 or so with the stock seat in solo saddle mode. It's better...my backside isn't pushed up against the front edge of the (empty) passenger pillion. But, in this configuration I can tell I'd be better off with a larger, longer reach saddle...as I'm hanging off the back of the solo cushion.

You're right about the paint job. Our Tribal Orange with the Aztec shadows really gets a lot of compliments - even by folks in cages giving the "thumbs up" and the like!

Ride it like you stole it!

I must say that I like the stock seat on my 14 CVO King.   Once I bought it I immediately was convinced that I needed a new seat and started looking for one.   I didn't buy one before my trip from MI to CO and back and was fearing a broken rear end - but it never happened.   In fact I didn't have any complaints about the seat at all and we did do a couple of 800+ mile days.   Maybe it broke in a little, maybe my ass got used to it or maybe both.   In any case I have stopped looking for a seat for my 14 SERK.

I would suggest to give it a little bit more time before deciding.   It will be tough to beat both the looks and convenience of the stock 2 piece seat as well.   Just my opinion.

In reality my issues with the seat are probably more related to the 290 pounds of pressure my arse puts on it more than a problem with its manufacture. ;D

I came an ace of buying a mustang hanging on the wall at Maryville yesterday, but I would have had to have my stock seat shipped home.

Next group of mods will be decatted pipe and fullsac cores and screens with a Mastertune TTS. Then a seat. Got plenty of time as I don't expect to be riding any long rides in the near future.

Added a set of highway pegs and custom dynamic front turn signals while in Maggie Valley, so the mods have officially begun.

I kept a Sundowner seat from a previous RK and now use it on my 2014 SERK. I find it really comfortable for long journeys and so does my girlfriend. She refused to sit on the standard seat. I recently did 830 miles in one day and 1945 miles in two and a half days with no real problems so it's definitely more comfortable especially with the highway pegs.

I prefer the look of the standard seat and often just swap them over if I'm just riding locally.

I bought my CVO & the next day rode it 580 miles in 9 hours to its new home that's not bad for such a low profile seat.  I must admit though I got a evil grin when my dealer got the " hammock" demo seat in for the 14 & later models

Well I've ridden a few 600 mile days, no issue with the seat. But then again I'm not a big bloke. Bought an Airhawk pad for my wife, she is fine with the passenger pad now.

I had my stock seat for a 13, which is pretty much the same seat modified to add a rider back rest, and while in there I had Seth add some gel.  I have done a few 700 mile days on it.  Not to bad.

Finally got the TTS, fullsac cores and screens last Wednesday. Got them and a decatted Headpipe installed that evening. Bike sounds a lot better and seems to rev more freely. If you all remember I mentioned that this bike had a pretty vigorous vibration at 2000 either accelerating, decelerating or steady throttle. Well I don't know why but after all the changes the vibration is almost completely gone :)

I guess something in the original exhaust mounting from the factory was in a bind, transferring the vibration to the frame in this RPM range. In any case, the bike feel so much better now and the seat may actually stick around a while. The other thing I noticed is that I like the seat better as a solo. When Susan was riding with me in the valley I had the rear pillion on and the front of it pushed me forward a bit. My riding position is much more relaxed when the pillion is off.

Just about got her where I want her, may round up a regular road king windshield for cold weather riding and may have Jody tune her in on the dyno, but that's about it for now. So far this is a great machine.
