Anybody building their own at home?
« on: October 11, 2014, 06:56:16 PM »

So my corvette finally sold today and after the wife took her cut, I've got a budget of about 8K to get my SERK squared away.  Is anyone doing their own engine builds at home?  I haven't heard anything good about any of the shops that are here locally, so I guess I should start researching.

I was planning on S&S 124 or 120r, but not sure that would put me any further ahead.

I have done cam swaps and stage 1's on Twin Cams and big bores and stokers on VRods, but I really don't know much about setting up the bottom end on a twin cam.  I had planned on swapping out my stock crank to an S&S crank, have my heads worked over, new cams, increase displacement (113) with higher compression, diamond cut fins, new headpipes, and a bigger TB if necessary. Oh an hopefully find a decent gas map for me to tune from with my Power Vision.

So has my budget been blown? My goals are to have fun without blowing the budget and have a very street friendly, reliable, strong ride.

Chris

Another one for T-Man and the S&S Crank :2vrolijk_21:

On the other hand, the S&S 124 is tough to beat, all things considered...

Spende it on suspension, brakes, sterio, tires and maybe a set of billet wheels.  Best bang for the buck. The engine thing is a big pain.

X2!  You'll still have some coin left over for other mods.  You'll also have a one year warranty.

For the S&S 124:
What's the lead time for ordering?
What are the odds of finding one made with SE cases?
Who would have the best price?

Kirby was also offering decent prices to make your cases and heads into a 124, using S&S wheels, cylinders, etc. Might ask him about that too.

Yes, using the OEM cases is a way that folks opt for.

I am doing a home build big inch.  The pieces that are non standard so to speak are a set of Screamin Eagle over the counter cases and an S&S 120 crank.  The S&S crank has the same rod length as the SE crankset.  Axtell makes a cylinder and piston set to bolt into this for a 124".  I however am just going to use the SE 4.060 cylinders and pistons for a 120 as I ended up with a set for a good price, otherwise the Axtell 124 set is what I would have used.  The Axtell Cyls are a little taller so adj. pushrods would be a must. The SE cases have the upgraded main bearings already in the cases so I am not going the Timken route.  That makes installing the crank easier as setting the Timkens takes special tools. I did have to buy another bearing set to get the inner race to press on the S&S crank.

So these components basically bolt together.  Good engine building technique always dictates lots of measuring so that last statement wasn't a just throw it together.  But chances are the pieces will fit without machine work.  Those are the "special pieces".  Through Ebay and other sources I have spent about 3k.  All these items were new.

The rest of the engine components are pretty standard items. Cam plate, oil pump, cams, heads, etc.  nothing real special for my build anyways.  My static comp will be 10.5:1.  I am using 259e cams, stock SE 110 heads.  This is going in a road glide I have converted over from an 09 Ultra (another story in itself).  The exhaust will be stock headers with CVO 4" cans and full sac cores.

I have been using a PV1 tuner with milder builds and if Dyno Jet can dial me in that's one way for me to go.  Unfortunately there are no PV tuners within 500 miles of me but Latus Motors in Gladsone does the SE Dyno tunes.

My intention is to build something more like a Cadillac big block, not a Chevy hot Rod.  There are no doubt 103 builds that are amazing but this build is just something I had a desire to do.

So that's my contribution to this discussion.

I actually decided to do a smaller build. A 113 kit from GMR and Steve is also doing my heads. A set of Woods 555 cams and I'm also a Power Vision fan. Like you, no one near me tunes with it so I will use a conservative tune for break in and then probably buy a TTS for the dyno tune. I will also probably end up using the stock TB and after seeing my pistons (with only 2100 miles on them) I will need to find or make a solution for CC evap.

1 question, are there better options for the AC than the stock ventilator?
