Ethanol in fuel
« on: October 24, 2014, 08:27:11 AM »

I had a friend tell me last night that a Harley dealer in Montana is telling people that if they use fuel with ethanol in it, it will void their warranty. He thinks it may even be printed in the new Harley manual. They are telling  people to find gas stations that sell fuel without ethanol in it. I find this hard to believe. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Your friends story is false, whether someone at a Harley dealership actually said it or not.  Sounds like some more of the patently false stuff that people with an agenda flood the internet and the airwaves with these days.

E-10 is a standard fuel these days, and is federally regulated, and every vehicle manufacturer has been required to design their vehicles to use it for decades.  Harley can not void anyone's warranty for using the fuel.  Now if you were to dump a significantly higher percentage ethanol product in the tank, like E-85, then that's a different story.  Only special flex fuel vehicles can use that blend.

My thoughts exactly. After writing this I started to look for ethanol free gas stations here in Las Vegas. I may have found 1 in Henderson . I figured this was bogus. Thanks for your input.

The LAST place to get accurate info about Harleys is from a DEALER!

EPA finally stepped up with comments.

http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/news/rightsnews/14-04-21/EPA_acknowledges_that_ethanol_damages_engines.aspx

Of course that is talking about vehicles that don't have modern fuel management systems that can compensate for the extra oxygen provided by the ethanol.  The issue being discussed isn't the current E-10 blend, but rather the E-15 blend being proposed by the ethanol manufacturers and sellers.  That blend will definitely adversely affect vehicles, especially the ones without closed loop feedback systems.  The special interests will likely still get approval, thanks to their many friends in Congress who only look at the money those special interests give them, not the scientific facts involved.
