2014 CVO LTD J&M Rokker Speaker/Amp Upgrade
« on: October 27, 2014, 04:53:11 PM »

Thinking about upgrading my speakers and amp on my 2014 CVO limited.
Has anyone changed their amp/speakers to the J&M Rokker 500w XX Amp & 6.65" XX 217w speakers?

Very disappointed in sound of my stereo. Sounds great in the dealership but on the road not great. Hardly any bass without distortion.  :nixweiss:

Yes I agree, I need to be sure that J&M Rokker speaker & amp will make a huge difference for the $1600+ upgrade cost!

A couple of years ago, I fell for the J&M pitch at Strugis, and made the mistake of going for the full package of the Rokkers in the Fairing, and the Rokkers in their lowers too, and the Rokkers rears as well, with the 125.2 amp driving the fronts. Like Waynel said, when you turn it up, it distorts pretty quickly. John was also kind of a prick when one of the speakers fell apart on the way home, where the tweeter was bouncing around in the woofer and damaged it. They suggested I should have stopped on the side of I-90 to take the fairing apart to stop the tweeter from ruining the woofer.  What?  How about using the right amount of glue in the first place?

Eventually they swapped it after much bitching, and having to make a deposit and waiting for a refund, but I got a bad taste from that. Also, he wasn't forthcoming about adjusting the amp, and so on. Their install guys are hacks too. What a frigging rats nest, and they stripped out one of the speaker fairing mounts too boot. Everything was crimpt connectors and a pound of electrical tape, jammed wherever. Not pretty.

Now two years later, I'm looking to unload this stuff. I'm probably shooting myself in the foot with this post, but I'll put it this way. You will get a modest improvement over the stock set up, but you are paying top dollar for mediocre speakers for sure. The Arc amp is nice, but you really have to go with low level outs on the head unit to get the most out of the amp.

Imho, for the money you can do much better. I wish I wouldn't have made the J&M mistake and got sucked in. This time, I'm going with Arc/Focals or BT. After hearing a Arc/Focal set up, I was blown away and it absolutely slaughtered this J&M stuff.

My .02 fwiw.

I'm actually satisfied with the sound on my 14 CVO Limited.  I just thought I'd put in my .02 on the BTs.  I installed Biketronics speakers and amps in both my 09 SG and 12 CVO SG.  Great sound.  The speakers in my 12 were made by Hybrid Audio Technologies and I think that Hertz made the speakers that I had in the 09.  If I was thinking of changing out the system in my 14, I would call BT and talk to Bill and see what he recommends.

November 5th, one week from today, I am gonna get Pete with Soundz Customz to install his level 4 system on my 2013 SERK. It will have Focal speakers up front in the lower fairings and either Hybrid technologies or Focals in the saddlebags. Right now I am leaning toward the Hybrids because I am told the bridged tweeters on them won't leak water into the saddlebags like the Focals will. However I am not making a final decision until I hear a demo of both speakers because Pete tells me that from a sound perspective the Focals blow the Hybrids out of the water. We shall see.

J&M buyers be advised that when buying a ROKKER DSP amp ..........you are at the mercy of what amplifier gains owner John Lazzeroni decides you are safe with ......it's almost as though you are leasing the audio equipment and he is making sure you don't damage anything! I upgraded my 2011 FLTRUSE to the 500 watt ROKKER DSP amp and 4 XX ROKKER speakers (2 in lower fairing). While they were a definite improvement over the factory 25w/channel setup .........I was disappointed that I couldn't achieve enough volume to enjoy music for interstate highway cruising. As is offered on the J&M website, I asked for a custom software program solution to provide more gain. Apparently, anything "custom" must involve John (who appears to be a "control freak"). I discovered that his attitude is that many of us bikers "would simply turn everything to maximum, regardless of the distortion levels and then complain when a speaker burns up ,,,,, " (a quote from John) ........so he insists on placing what amounts to a "volume governor" in the DSP software on his DSP ROKKER amps. I discovered that my HK radio volume control ceased functioning at approximately the 60% point (10 of the 17 volume "bars"). Repeated requests for more audio gain resulted in two "improvements" which were barely discernible .........he finally decided to ignore me even though I'd spent well over a thousand bucks and had always been polite. Here's hoping you'd have better luck with J&M than I did >:(

Adjusting the ARC amp isn't rocket science. Just download the ARC manual from the website, and adjust the gains accordingly. Pretty straight forward.

I bought a used 2011 FLTRUSE earlier this year from a member here and he had the J&M Rokker system in it. So I can not speak as to the problems with the owner of J&M as I never dealt with him. But the pic here that shows 40% of non usable volume is exactly how mine was. Which was actually a good thing because the speakers were already distorting badly at that 50 - 60 % level anyways. The system sounded great in his garage when I looked at the bike, but sucked on the highway to the point it was not worth listening to at all. I ended having a custom installation done with Focals and Memphis Audio amps by Justin at Infocus Mobile Audio in NH. And all I can say now is WOW. The sound is crisp and clean and more volume than you can handle even at 80 MPH on the hwy.

Oh, and by the way, came to find out when he replaced my system, the previous owner decided not to even put in the J&M amp. Talk about a hack job
