I would probably stick with the Harley filters (5 micron) and not go to aftermarket or car oil filters.  Its my understanding that K&N is not as good as than 5 micron H.D. filtration.  Just easier to remove......Buy OEM from online sellers offering 20% off MSRP....I just as soon buy everything from my selling dealer if he has earned the privilege of your patronage.  I have had issues on bikes where the dealer "threw it my way" or gave me leeway on a warranty item and part of that was earned thru buying my bikes, ESP, parts and miscellaneous from the same dealer for 12 years....This is just my personal opinion....your bike your call.

I agree with BigD2112...

I disagree, if you're talking about BigD2112's conclusion that the H-D 5 micron filter is automatically better than any of the aftermarket offerings.  If you read and understand the report LC110 posted a link to, you would know that the 5 micron claim printed on the box from Harley is meaningless.  Harley has a long history of claiming stuff that isn't true, just to fool their customers into buying their stuff rather than the same stuff at a lower price elsewhere.  And don't forget all those lies they told for decades about synthetic motor oil, right up until the day they started selling SYN3.  Overnight synthetic went from being the worst possible thing you could do to your Harley engine, to being the best thing since sliced bread (as long as it was the stuff they sold, that is).

Go to any big store that sells a wide variety of oil filters and look at the boxes.  How many do you see that mention a micron rating?  Next to none, and that would be because there is no such industry standard.  It falls more under marketing claims and hype, not factual information.

I trust K&N just a little more than the MOCO. I can guarantee that the MOCO doesn't have an exclusive factory where they manufacture their filters and that it goes to the low bidder just like their lifters.

(For those who would like to know.) Harley oil filters are made by http://www.champlabs.com/content/oil-filters.
I have used both HD, K&N and WIX oil filters all without problems.
They are all quality filters and will work just fine with a mechanically sound HD.
As Jerry said the 5 micron claim is meaningless. With White blood cells being 25 microns and Red blood cells being 8 microns in size maybe HD should label the box for medical use also ?  :nixweiss:

I would never disagree with anything Harley that Jerry recommends. I do though agree with bd2112 about the building of a relationship with a dealer that you trust. If my dealer performs all service and provides all the parts while I pay their exorbitant prices I sure as hell better not get any bs if/when I need to file a claim.  In fact they better be in my corner when it comes time to face off against the esp company.  Yeah I know...I probably need to get my head out of my ass.

I just take a plastick bag and feed it up under the filter, and then remove the filter right into the bag  :2vrolijk_21: never makes a mess anywhere  :2vrolijk_21:

Ok a ways back there is talk about clean up and trays. Here is something I have had some success with. I put high concentration of dish soap and water in a spray container. I then loosen the filter off to finger tight and then spray the soapy water under the area where the oil drips are going to be. The soapy water repels the oil a bit and makes clean up with water easier.
