starter did not disengage after motor starts

My 2000 FXR4 CVO had been sluggish to start. I replaced the battery and it cranked fine several times and Rode 150 miles. After filling tank, I started bike and it made noise I had never heard before. I shut it down and restarted and no problem. What happened was the electric starter did not disengage after the motor started and it made awful noise. I removed the starter and took it apart. I could feel the starter clutch bearings binding when turning but hand. I ordered one by All Balls for 40 bucks on Amazon. Are they any good. Did I order the correct parts?

I installed a All Balls starter clutch.  Same as the one from Spyke
I got it cheap online for 39 bucks with free shipping. Just be careful when disassembling starter. There are 5 rollers in a open
Plastic cage. I dropped one on the floor and it took a while to find it. Works fine.

Glad you got it fixed and kudos for doing it yourself.

Years ago, I took a carb off a vette to get rebuilt by an old timer with a great reputation for his work. I got to his shop and was surprised to see a white plastic tablecloth sitting on the floor of his garage all spread out with a few tools laying on it. He saw my puzzled look and said " I rebuild carbs all day long. You ever see one of those little springs in a carb go flying when you take it apart? They're a helluva lot easier to find with my old eyes when you're sitting on a white plastic tablecloth instead of standing at a workbench."
I've since used his advice whenever I'm working on something with small parts. Beats the hell out of trying to find something on a plain concrete floor.

Pull the solenoid cover off and check for burned contacts.

the solenoid or contacts would have stuck causing the started to keep running, make sure you check it out as it would probably happen again I had it happen to me and had to pull a lead off the battery to get it to stop.

I recently rebuilt the solenoid contacts.  They were fine limited pitting only a little.  It was the starter clutch.  It is supposed to spin only one direction. It did that but would stick or bind in the direction it is supposed to turn . Has been working fine now
