Close call.....
« on: December 26, 2014, 05:59:58 PM »

Nice day here in NY, so ALMOST took the bike out for a ride. I decided to take out a Corvette that I have but rarely use these days.
I'm not on the road 10 minutes, and an elderly woman turns left right in front of me, nearly causing a head on collision. Two lane road, going about 25-30 miles per hour (busy area), she is heading toward me in the opposite direction, and then WHAM she turns right in front of me.
I stopped with about 5 feet to spare.
As many know, this is a leading cause of motorcycle fatalities. It's a sober reminder that you can't take anything for granted and YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO CAREFUL.
Oh, the icing on the cake was when the person driving BEHIND ME beeped her horn because I stopped in the middle of the road.  >:( >:( >:(
Be careful out there!

About a year before my father passed away, I took his cars keys away.  I got an earful from him about it every time I saw him for that last year, but I never budged and kept telling myself I was doing the right thing, regardless of how unhappy he was about it.  My parents lived a block from a grade school, a block from a middle school, a block from a park...  I hear so many people say they should take the keys from their parents, but for whatever reason, they don't do it.  When I read stories like this one, I wonder how many children live with the regret of letting their parents continue to drive long after they know it is no longer safe...

Two years ago my 88 year old mother HANDED ME the keys (she beat me to it). Guess what she did? She turned left into oncoming traffic and got in a head on collision. She didn't see the car.
The other car was totaled but thankfully no one was seriously hurt.
Your point is well taken. I was too late on that one.
I keep thinking, what if I was on my bike and didn't get to stop in time? It could have been a very different day.

Glad the man that began this thread is fine.  That said first.  But, yeah, Scott, I've had the thoughts you suggest more than once.

My dad's last couple years he was a hazard.  Even when he was healthy he always drove fast and never met a corner that didn't beg for two wheels.  I was the only person that would ride with him toward the end.  Mainly in the old 56 T-Bird I restored for him.  So not the best handling car in the world to begin with.  But he loved it.  There wasn't a lot he could do those last couple years and I adored the man and the time we could spend together.  So as often as I thought about it and knew I should I never pulled the trigger on his driving.

Fortunately despite visiting a few curbs, the occasional sidewalk, the erstwhile excellent adventure and the uncommon foray to unpaved surfaces he never actually hit anyone nor anything.  But I too occasionally puckered too tightly on our trips to car shows or elsewhere when it was "his turn" to drive.

Not turn away from the original poster's intent here.  Once again with all due regard to the original poster and gratitude that he's fine.  But I feel like saying "here's to our Dads, their foibles and difficulties notwithstanding, may they be tearing up whatever track or heavenly country road they see fit and enjoying every minute of it!"

My cousin in-law's father (98 years young) is still driving. The man still has his witts, but I've been behind him and it's time to take the keys (reaction time, calculated desisions). She says he's okay. I hope it stays that way with nobody hurt. All this being said I understand where Twolane is coming from.

Let us not forget...that some day...sooner or later, like it or not, it will be our turn to hand over the keys. Hopefully, when our time comes, it will be done in a dignified manner and we are all wise enough to acknowledge its necessity. Therefore, lets not waste one day and get out there and do what it is we enjoy doing...and heres hoping for later instead of sooner for us all.

After a certain age it should be mandatory with a new drivers test every other year or so. That would weed out the worst ones. Works okay with airplanes. I would set the starting gate at 60.

Unfortunately driving is a right today but I should be a privilege based on health and capability.

Harley's and Vettes - nothing better. Love the C7. I want to get the new Z06 Convertible but I think I'll be sleeping in the garage if I get another one.

Man I got a Harley and a 44 year old vette to avoid speeding tickets. I would be in jail with a C7 .

That's a beautiful C3. That big block could end you up in jail. They were the rave back in the day.
