Funny. Key Fob
« on: December 29, 2006, 10:20:15 AM »

I'm new here and decided to give a try at starting a thread. I've spent the last couple of days reading till my eyes are glazed. Do I get Harley Chrome points for starting a thread?

I've got the new 07 Jester (I had to figure out what a Jester was). I thought I was the only person to ever add the qucik disconnect to the Jester. After finding this site, I see I was wrong. I decided to take a short ride one night after work. I had removed the tour pack and left the security key fob in the TP. the FP happened to be right next to the Jester. It, of course fired right off, and down the road I went. I stopped at a joint to grab a six pack and drop in bags. I didn't really need to make a beer run, but, I simply was looking for a place to ride. The alarm started going off as I tried to crank it. Luckily the bags weren't locked and I could get to the manual to figure out how to disarm the security system. Am I the only person this has ever happened to?

First congrats on the thread and second, nope you aren't the first.  At least you were prepared with the owner manual.

There are other posts here telling/asking about the alarma nd its op.  As I recall at least one includes the obligatory phone call to the missus who makes a not so happy drive out to where hubby has stranded himself at a gas station or whatever.  (hopefully not the gentlemen's club after a few  [smiley=drink.gif] [smiley=drink.gif])

Looks like one of your 07 brethren did a similar run: http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1157589505/0

Can remember at least three such stories.  That's just a poor design.  System shouldn't such that you can start it, drive away and strand yourself.  It's the difference between designing somthing that's idiot proofed and something that idiot inducing.

OR the girlfriends house! Reminds me of the country song, "The day my wife met my girlfriend" I think I'd have it towed first. Yes, I was lucky I could get to the manual. If you haven't done it before, it's not a simple procedure.

I'd have to have the manual with me too.  On Off, press blinker on the left 72 times, now on the right 73 times, hop on one foot now the other, Turn off/On, repeat procedure backwards from first time.........call for service.

Amen to that Don!! Service dept. doesn't like the devices from their standpoint either.
Easy to just store the fug-fob on the scooter somewhere, but that kinda defeats the whole security thing  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

In my not-so-humble opinion, this new security system is a huge step backward (and another screw-up from my friends at the MoCo).  After this happens to someone, the obvious solution will be to store the fob somewhere on the bike, which totally defeats the entire purpose of the system.  It wouldn't affect someone like me who carries the fob and key in his pocket, but I can see how someone with an '07 with electric bag latches could figure he doesn't need to carry the key with him.

If the purpose of this change was to make setting the alarm automatic for those who tend to forget, all they had to do was enable the "auto arm" function in the old system by default (system arms 30 seconds after shutting the bike down).  You still use the button to disarm.

Maybe they need to jump directly to the next level of security, using biometrics.  Retina scans, thumb prints, even implanted RFID devices.  Or better yet, let us decide when and if we want to enable the damn security system.

Reading the 07 Service manual, there is actually a reference to press the button on the FOB after replacing the battery.  No button guys!
Both times I left my bike at the dealer, I forgot to give them the FOB.  I was in the showroom when they tried to move it.  They love me there.

I'll go against the grain, but I LIKE the new system.  But I always have my keys (and fob) with me.  I lock it sitting in the locked garage.  The damn things are way too easy to steal as it is.  I usually put a disc lock on it as well.  Yeah, I know if they want it they're going to get it, but at least they have to work at it.  Hopefully the noise will then allow me to put some lead in their diet.  As those of you saw in MV, we even cable the two bikes together when we're traveling.  As for the new system, I've thought about upgrading the 06 to the new system, because she always forgets to DISARM the thing. Fellas,
This new system was adopted by some not riding geek that works at the design center that drives a Lexus LS.  They were the first to do this and it works great for car owners............they have always needed keys to start,  so when you leave the house,  you grab your keys and off you go.........Pops has the one of the first Lexus' that had this feature and loves it.........no need to unlock the doors.......don't bother taking the keys out of the pocket to start the car......in short,  the car knows the owner and loves him.

Now on to the Harley,  I've owned many Harleys over the years,  and can tell you that I carry the keys for my bike maybe 20% of the time (as I'm sure many others do too).  I tell friends that you don't need keys to start a Harley and they are always suprised (make sense coming from cagers).  If I am riding locally,  you gotta be nuckin futz to screw with my bike while I'm in range.  But the geek at the MoCo said in a high level meeting one day "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if each bike recognized his master and just unlocked???".  I can tell anyone that has such system on their bike,  DO NOT LEAVE THE FOB ON OR IN THE BIKE.  The freakin low life scum sucking, freak of nature, spineless leaches that make a living stealing our rides will find out about this and take advantage.

If you are one of the owners that has the system,  just make it a habit to take the keys with you same as you do when your driving your car.

That was one of my favorite 45’s; listened to it all the time. The song on the flip side was: “she wouldn’t kiss me on the river, so I paddled her back”. :)
