I'll start off w/the basics and excuse me if you are already aware of them...

One is a softail frame and the other is the a touring frame
There may/will be differences in handling and comfort of the two

Also I believe the motors are different (one balanced, one not) but both having the same displacement (110). However due to the difference of the motors there will/could be difference in hp/tq numbers.

Thank you for the reply. Would you suggest one over the other given the mileage, year, etc.?

Thanks,

What is your riding style and intended purpose of the bike? What bikes have you owned/ridden before?

Lots of experience in riding road and dirt bikes through the years. I have had one Harley and it was  an XL1200 Sportster. It was too small for my wife and I. I weigh 200 lbs and my wife weighs about 210. We will ride casual trips into the mountains here in Colorado and no marathon trips. I would say an average of 30 to 40 miles each time out on the bike other than a ride into the mountains on occassion.

Thanks,

Not knowing if you are in a location that you could take a test ride on both styles of bikes I would suggest if you are you (and wife) try out a Softail (Deluxe/Fatboy) and a Road King to compare comfort. If you are looking at these bikes at a dealership see if they offer rental bikes and try out the two different styles (I'd even ask if the dealer does offer rentals if I end up buying one of the bikes from him will he give me credit back on the purchase of the rental fees). Since by your admission you will not be doing any long distance riding I can't recommend one over the other in that aspect.... both will work for the limited riding you have indicated and it will just end up which one you like the most and fits you and the wife the best... either one will be an upgrade from a Sporty. :)

I think that is way to much money for a 2007 Road King...IMO

But as already stated....take them for a test and you will know the difference after the first 5 miles.

Good Luck!!

Thank you. Good info. I think the 2007 is a little pricey also!

just for a price comparison for you http://www.nationalpowersports.net/itemDetail.aspx?itemID=11397

2007 CVO RK with 38,500 miles reduced to 16,499

i think you will find the RK more comfortable for 2 up riding then a softail

I agree about the pricing on the '07 SERK, it's probably a few thousand too high.

I had an '08 SERK Annie and it was a pretty good short trip bike for the wife and I.  At the time I weighed in at around 270# and my wife was in the 180# range.  Although the air shocks were junk, still are for that matter, it was a good rider.

I traded it in five years ago and the dealership sold it for $22,500 and it only had around 12k miles on it.

The '07 does not have ABS, 6 gal tank or throttle by wire that the '08 had.  I traded in on a '09 SERG O/B and it's a better ride than the SERK ever was.

I've heard that the Softails have very little travel on the swingarm and for your riding I would think any touring frame bike would be better.  I would look for an '09 and newer.  You don't have to go the CVO route to get a great touring bike used, but with the CVO you do get some added bling and in all cases you get a larger motor than the stock bikes of the same year.

I would not be too eager on an '07 SERK simply because all the time I was waiting for my '08 to arrive, all I did was read of all the issues the early '08s had as well as most all '07s.  I'm sure that the bike you're looking at has had the revisions necessary, but the '08 will give you more for your money and an '09 will be just that much better with the frame design.

Good luck with your purchase and welcome aboard CVO Harley...

Oh man, good info guys. Thank you so much. If anyone else wants to chime in feel free. The more info the better. I am about 2 weeks out from a purchase... I do want to stay with the CVO upgrade either way though...

Well I just lost my post so I will enter it again a little shorter. I traded in my FLSTSE last year and got more for the trade in then they are asking. In my area the FLSTSE is listed in KBB for $21 and the FLHRSE for $17. I loved the FLSTSE but the stock windshield was too low. I think the bike sits lower than the RK which you may or may not like. As suggested above go the dealer and take a test ride. Even if the year is different or it is not a CVO (I think even the Heritage is similar to the Convertible as far as the ride is concerned) you can get an idea if you like the RK or softtail.  Good luck and enjoy whatever ride you end up with!

Two different bikes, go sit on them and take them for a ride! If you do a lot of riding with the wife a touring bike CVO or not would be my first choice as the suspension is much better. I have ridden and owned both, hands down the CVO Streetglide (Touring) was much better.

looks like you are in CO so i'm guessing a test ride is out of the question in the next 2 weeks. why the rush?

No rush other than its the best time of year to buy one. We live in the Fort Collins area on the front range. We have snow now but in a week or so it coulod be riding weather again very easily...
