I did a lot of reading and test reports , then switched to Amsoil from HD synthetic. Amsoil tends to thin out after only a few hundred miles and oil pressure was lower than HD syn. What's worse is on a recent service , cam bearing journal wear was evident. Cams had about 25k on them. Oil had been changed every 2,500 miles. I'm no longer a believer in the Amsoil hype

I am stationed in Germany and German economy prices for Oil are obscene $25.00 a quart. The on-base auto shop stopped ordering Mobile 1 20-50 and only carries Royal Purple 20-50 automotive oil, but I have never heard of it.  Read somewhere on here (Old Post from 2011) that its an all right oil. Anyone done any research or can point me to some data on the quality of Royal Purple?  Would you guys run it is the bottom line.

"The fellow told me it is a play on words and leaves us with the illusion that it is synthetic but it's actually Mobile 1 just packaged for Harley Davidson."

This doesn't make sense, Mobil 1 is a full synthetic, and darn good as well.

Absolutely.  If I though Syn3 was Mobil 1, I'd switch to it from Amsoil!  We can't get the V-Twin flavour of Mobil 1 over here, I'm afraid.  I think it's the best Synthetic there is though (in the non V-twin version at least).  Over 35 years ago Mobil were starting to develop synthetic motor oils, and the ancestor of Mobil 1 was a product called "Mobil SHC" (SHC stood for Synthesised Hydro Carbon I think).  It was very expensive, and only came in litre tins.  Every single tin had a unique serial number!  I used it - Mobil gave me it free as a type of sponsorship - in a very highly stressed Cosworth motorsport engine, and it provided phenomenal protection and reliability in those engines. (Made the exhaust smell great too, just like Castrol R!)  :)  Been a fan of Mobil's synthetics ever since.

Not sure I'd blame that on the oil.  Cam bearings have been a weak point in Harley motors for a while.  I've trashed two due to cam bearing failure and was running Mobil 1 V-Twin in one and H-D Syn 3 in the other.  Personally I don't think the oil has a darn thing to do with the failures - poor design and poor quality parts are the culprit imo.

Club member here uses nothing but the cheapest stuff he can fine at Walmart
Bike is a 2013 SG
We'll see what the motor looks like after about 80K miles.
He has used the same stuff in his '05 WG and swears by it. Just changes if more often.

I'm not going to step into the ring on this one, I will with draw my my comment to avoid controversy and just say that there are better choices than RP and should be explored.

Fact: I use Amsoil in my bike.
Fiction/ BS: It is only out performed by Peanut Oil in frying a turkey. Did I really fry a turkey in Amsoil? The Peanut oil was as good as Syn-3 in the crankcase, however I was always hungry riding.

Go and purchase LIQUI MOLY 10/60 GTI RACE TECH made in Germany. This is just the best, check it out lots of info on forums around the world with great reviews.

How many miles did you run Syn3?  All of the wear could have happened while using Syn, and the Amsoil isn't going to cure the problem.  This is in addition to the well-known problems with cam bearings, as stated by Jerry (ultrafxr).

If you think the oil actually is "thinning out" (viscosity is being reduced), you should do an oil analysis to verify.  A rich fuel mixture and/or worn rings can cause oil dilution (viscosity reduction), and regular overheating of (any) oil will reduce viscosity.  An analysis will aid troubleshooting.  Let us know what you find.

don't do that.  i honestly would like to hear.  if there is an issue with royal purple, i'd like to know about it, i've been using it in the wife's bike since 2012.  i live in a small town, and options are limited.

liqui moly 10w60

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=liqui+moly+10w60

$40 shipped, to an APO FPO I don't know, but it is a German product, ought to be able to find it, perhaps fo to the PX gas station and ask for it.

Here is the contact page for LiquiMoly, perhaps you can find a retailer from here, or email their info page.

Thanks R0de I will check it out.

I am pretty sure that with tech the way it is now the difference's in oil these days is miniscule, but this is my baby and want to make sure it's getting the love it deserves.  I figure as long as I am changing the oil every 3K and using a full Syn, I am doing my part.
