They are cold pressures. Once I got it up and running, they backed down slightly but not much......
Did the dealership actually check the gauge for accuracy with a calibrated mechanical gauge, or did they just use the WAG method (wild assed guess) and throw a cam plate in the engine?
When discussing oil pressures, it is best to talk about pressures at normal operating temps and at a specific rpm. Cold pressures will vary all over the place, depending on things like actual ambient temps as well as type/viscosity/brand of oil. The shop manual will give an actual specification for oil pressure at a specified operating temperature (230°F on recent Twin Cams - unless you're riding in Alaska, you can usually assume you've reached normal operating temperature after riding about 10 miles). The 2005 manual, for example, lists a specification of 30-38 psi at 2000 rpm and 230°F. Maybe someone with a 2007 or later manual could check section 3.1 for the current spec and let us know if it's any different.
They don't actually give a spec for pressure at idle, but somewhere around 10 psi seems to be a common value, once again at normal operating temp.
