NOPE.  It's moisture in the horn.  Lots of 'em are having this problem....occurs from either washing and spraying water up into the horn or riding in heavy rain.  Drys out and does ok and then re-occurs much the same as the moisture problem shows up in the gauge(s).  Aggrevating, but, it's a motorcycle and not water-proof!   Har!   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  spyder

Spyder, I hate to disagree about the moisture in the horn theory.  My horn started sounding like a lame duck a few weeks ago.  My bike has not been ridden in the rain in over a month.    Bike is always parked in the garage.  The bike has been cleaned with just a cleaner/wax spray, not with soap and water.  I check my horn now whenever I take it out for a ride.  Sometimes it sounds like a duck and sometimes it doesn't! [smiley=nixweiss.gif]   I will just keep checking my horn until somebody fingers out a way to fix this problem.  Ride Safe   [smiley=helmet.gif]

Fixed mine several times by replacing the horn unit itself.  With mine, it was a matter of trying new, out of the box, HD horn units until getting one that would work.  I'm not sure it has anything to do with  moisture as 2 in a row were defective out of inventory.  PS....Same guy made the horns as chromed the wheels..... I am on my second horn now. Bike only has 1200 miles on it. Now it's bad. I heard that there is some type of adjustment inside. Does anyone have that info?

There is a screw on the back side that is sealed - this adjusts the gap of the electrical contacts inside the horn, and is used during manufacture to "tune" the horn.  You can pick out the sealer and try adjusting the screw until you get the best/most consistent sound.  You will need to reseal the screw with a dab of silicone sealer.  This will usually get a horn working for awhile, but the answer is to find a good quality replacement horn that will fit the stock location.  I replaced the horn on my '99 FXDX with one from an auto parts store back in '00 (had to slightly modify the wiring to make the connectors fit), and it was still working fine in '05.

I just noticed something interesting - we began having issues where I work this past week (auto assembly plant) with our horns sounding like crap.  I pulled my H-D horn today, and it is the exact same horn from the exact same supplier (Hella out of Mexico).
We changed suppliers in the past year from Fiamm to Hella - I assume because Hella came in with a lower price.

Anyway, I've attached a photo showing the location of the tuning screw for those who wish to play around with it.  Just remember to seal it back up when you're done.

Might want to check out this site for alternatives to the stock H-D horn - based on the measurements given, the Fiamm's listed on this site are a direct replacement.  You can buy two horns (Dual AM-80, Hi/Lo) with relay and wiring for less than what H-D charges for the HO add-on horn.
