HORN ASTHMA
« on: July 18, 2005, 11:51:05 AM »

Has anyone had this happen yet, the horn sounding like the Aflac duck with your hand around its throat ?? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] It first happened a few weeks ago. On a ride in Reno I hit the horn button only to get a muffled sound. Lasted all day so that night I looked at it thinking I did something wrong in installing the Kuryakyn horn cover. Did'nt find anything wrong and the horn worked fine. Got up in the AM for another ride , horn works fine but then after a hour of riding nothing but a muff sound.  [smiley=confused5.gif] I know I'm not the only one as two weeks ago at Reno Harley I see a guy on a SE Duece showing the tech the same thing. The tech had no idea what could be wrong so I just gave em a couple muff's and told em to call me if they ever figure it out. I think its a heat problem ?? Everynight or AM horn works fine but after riding or in hot weather the duck is back. Any thoughts ??  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

That is exactly how mine sounded when I took delivery from the dealer.  Make sure the horn is tight on the bracket and the wires are secure.  The problem comes from a poor ground, and is also why it is intermittent.

NOPE.  It's moisture in the horn.  Lots of 'em are having this problem....occurs from either washing and spraying water up into the horn or riding in heavy rain.  Drys out and does ok and then re-occurs much the same as the moisture problem shows up in the gauge(s).  Aggrevating, but, it's a motorcycle and not water-proof!   Har!   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  spyder

Yeah, 'er 'uh, monorat,
Get a set of BJ's Air Horns!  They'll hear you, then!  People in cars can't hear the stock Harley horns when they are working properly, much less impaired.  Later--HUBBARD

Monorat,

I second Hubbard's suggestion. When you use the BJ Horn's people think they just pulled in front of a freight train. It can be fun to watch their reactions.....really let's em know your there. [smiley=shocked2.gif]

The folks from BJ Horn's are very nice people to deal with also. One place to buy them is here:

Wow! My horn started the Aflac sound on the ride to the wall. I asked my dealer to look at it and didn't really check it out when I got it back (I was getting new rims - peeling chrome). Darn horn fell off (hanging by the wires) about 150 miles later. I've taken to rolling on the throttle and giving "The look." Neither is very efficient, I keep with Hubbard's " twist it till you can't see anyone in the mirror!"

How much do the BJ's set you back.  I'm still trying to convince my wife this bike came with everything. [smiley=bigok.gif]

Having heard these things go off before it's for sure they do make a joyful noise.  And lots of it.  But (unlike a lot of people whose opinions are also just fine !!) I always thought those little trumpets hanging on the side of the engine just looked silly.  Very much like, actually, the horn I put on the neck of my niece's little pink tricycle  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

2LANE,

Are you saying your more of a "cow bell" kind of guy? [smiley=confused5.gif]

In any case to answer a previous question I believe I paid about $200.00 installed during a Daytona Bikeweek promotion BJ's was running. That was 3 years ago and I guess the price should still be about the same (edit:checked hyperlink above J&P has them for $199.95).......... Still a very good investment compared to my insurance deductible.

FYI, BJ's Specialties are usually at the major events.

According to BJ's site  http://www.bjspecialties.com/order.html  , about $165 plus $10 shipping.

That is exactly what has kept me from installing air horns so far; I just can't get over how they look.  If there was a way to get that sound without having them hanging out in the open like that I would be there.

Of course, for those who really love the "big rig" sound, a large set of trumpets could be mounted to the lid of the tour-pak, I suppose.   [smiley=1syellow1.gif] [smiley=1syellow1.gif]

In all seriousness, I am looking into finding a pair of electro-mechanical horns that I could mount somewhere more discreet.  Some of the dual horns available will produce nearly 130 db, which sure beats the you-know-what out of the stock horn.

I installed the H-D high output horn on my SEEG.  It consists of an additional horn that mounts under the fairing resulting in a loud dual tone (high and low pitch) like a car has.  MUCH better than just the the one horn.

Unfortunately, that is only when they are both working. [smiley=dunce2.gif]  My SEEG has been suffering from horn asthma, also. [smiley=furious.gif]
